I’ve been going to Greece every summer for most of my adult life and I still see first timers make these ferry mistakes every single summer.

The one that gets people the most? Thinking they can take the ferry from Santorini back to Athens and make their flight home. That ferry is 5 to 6 hours. Always fly back from Santorini or give yourself a full travel day.

And if you’re leaving from Athens, did you know there are two ferry ports? Most ferries leave from Piraeus but some leave from Rafina. They are not close to each other. Always double check before you book.

Greece island hopping is one of the most magical trips you can take. These mistakes are so easy to avoid once you know about them, which is exactly why I made this.

🏖️ Kolymbithres – famous for its unique rock formations

Lisbon is incredible but Sintra? That’s where the magic is ✨

I booked this full day, small group tour through and it was genuinely one of my favorite days in Portugal. 🇵🇹 Here’s my highlights:

The group was max 8 people so it never felt like a tourist cattle call & was perfect group size as I was solo traveling. Our guide was the best, giving us history and context as we drove between stops, and then actual useful tips during our free time in each stop so we weren’t just wandering around guessing.

And the free time in Sintra? The perfect amount of time for exploration and relaxation. You get to roam the historic center on your own, which means you actually get to feel the place instead of rushing through it on a schedule and grab some lunch along the way. 🌯

We also hit Cabo da Roca (the westernmost point of continental Europe, and the views are as dramatic as they sound), did a wine tasting in Colares at a family owned winery where they walked us through 3 regional wines made in Sintra, and ended in Cascais with more free time to explore the beautiful coastal town. 🌊

If you’re planning a trip to Lisbon, this day trip is a non-negotiable. Booked through and I’d book it again without hesitation.

The beaches in Crete that will make you rebook your flight before you even leave 🏖️🇬🇷

Most tourists never find them and I can personally say I came back from my trip last summer saying that they were some of the best beaches in Greece!

Seitan Limania 🌊 — the first stop I send every client to straight off the plane. A remote rocky cove surrounded by dramatic rock formations with water so turquoise it doesn’t look real. 15 minutes from the airport.

Balos Lagoon 🩵 — only reachable by boat or a serious 4x4 drive and worth absolutely every second of the journey to get there. The moment the lagoon comes into view from the water is one of the most breathtaking things I have ever experienced. White sand, shallow turquoise water that goes on forever and the island of Gramvousa rising dramatically beside it.

Elafonisi 🌸 — pink sand beach. Yes, actually pink. In Greece. The sand gets its color from crushed coral shells and the water is so shallow and turquoise it looks like a tropical lagoon. One of the most unique beaches in all of Europe and completely unmissable.

Preveli Beach 🌴 — you hike through a palm tree gorge with a river running alongside you and arrive at one of the most dramatic and beautiful beaches on the island. There is genuinely nothing like Preveli anywhere else in Greece. The combination of palm trees, fresh water river and Aegean sea meeting in one place is extraordinary. This is south Crete at its most magical.

Kalypso Beach 🏖️ — tucked beneath dramatic cliffs on the south coast with crystal clear water and almost zero tourists even in peak summer season. The drive to get here winds through some of the most beautiful Cretan countryside you will ever see. Sit here for an afternoon and you will understand exactly why people keep coming back to Crete year after year.

Five beaches. One island. This is why Crete deserves more than two nights.
