Sounio sunsets

Just forty-five minutes to the south of Athens, lies Sounio. Famed for its dramatic views of the Aegean, and the temple of Poseidon still standing guard over Attica, it is an ideal escape from the busyness of Athens.

Sounio is especially known for its beautiful sunsets and moonrises, particularly during the summer season. Spend a quiet day away from the hubbub, swimming in one of the many beaches (or windsurfing for the more adventurous ones). Explore Sounio national park with its pine-shaded trails, visit the temple of Poseidon or even the nearby Mineralogical Museum of Lavrio. Fill up on seafood in one of the seaside tavernas and, time permitting, check out any musical events that might be taking place.

The naming of Athens

It is said that in the days of old, when Athens was founded, the gods vied for the spot of being her patron deity. Of all two emerged, Athena and Poseidon, who presented their cases to Athens’ first king, Kekrops. Upon the hill, where the Acropolis now lies, Poseidon struck his trident and a spring of salt water came through. Athena then struck the ground with her spear and an olive tree grew.

The other gods convened upon the hill, to witness the boons and judge the worthiest. The olive tree was deemed the best by Zeus and thus the city was henceforth known as Athens, sacred and protected by the goddess whose name it now bore. And it is said that Poseidon never forgot the insult of his gift being spurned, and to this day Athens suffers for a lack of fresh water in punishment for the choice made then.

Theatre of Dionysus
Nestled on the foothill of the Acropolis lies the theatre of Dionysus. Originally part of a sanctuary dedicated to the god of wine and revelry, it has existed in some capacity since at least the mid-6th century BCE. It was the main site for the city-wide festival of Dionysia, and remained in use continually until the Roman period. It later fell into disuse and wasn’t rediscovered and restored until the 19th century CE.

The significance of this theatre is not just in its longevity, but also in its role in the establishment of the art of drama as it is known today. Western theatre has its roots in large part in the plays written and performed here as part of the Great Dionysia. Happy May day!

The sun is shining, the bees are buzzing and house doors all over are decorated with flower wreaths. A custom popular across Europe, in Greece it has its roots on the spring festivals dedicated to the goddesses Demeter and Persephone. Its modern iteration hails to the period between the 12th and 15th century CE, when Frankish influence moved the early spring celebrations from March to May.

Traditionally, a wreath is constructed from greens and wildflowers, either the night before or on May 1st and hung from the house’s front door to invite good fortune and ward off the evil eye. The wreath was then displayed until the 24th of June, when it was burnt in the bonfires on St John’s feast day. Of course, in some areas, it was just as traditional to attempt to steal the wreaths from as many houses as possible, adding a somewhat chaotic element to an otherwise tame tradition…

Greek souvlaki! If you have heard of nothing else Greek, chances are these words have crossed your sight at some point. Part of the local cuisine since antiquity, the quintessential meat-on-a-stick remains as popular as ever.

As with all beloved classics the recipe has not changed much since antiquity where it is described in contemporary sources as “pieces of meat, pita bread, cheese and dill”. In its modern incarnation it is served wrapped in pitta bread, with tzatziki sauce and onion (later additions include tomato and fried potatoes). Its modern resurgence started in 1924 in Nikaia, and then Monastiraki square in Athens. As a sit-down meal with beer on the side (Fanta for the kids) or carried by one of the hundreds of delivery drivers whizzing through the streets of Athens, it is an essential part of any visit to the capital.
