The celebration of the Epiphany in Athens, with warm weather & sunny skies.

Today is the Theophany, or simply Ta Fota (The Lights), the day that the Greek Orthodox Church commemorates the baptism of Jesus in the Jordan River. Custom calls for the blessing of the waters, where priests accompanied by a procession of sailors and orchestras, throw a crucifix (The Holy Cross) into the sea. Thousands of devout daredevils all over the country brave the cold waters in an attempt to retrieve the cross which will bring honour and good fortune all year round. In Athens, you can catch this ritual at the Piraeus harbour and Palio Faliro beach.
