In Greek mythology, Perseus was the legendary founder of Mycenae and, alongside Cadmus and Bellerophon, the greatest Greek hero and slayer of monsters before the days of Heracles. He beheaded the Gorgon Medusa and saved Andromeda from the sea monster Cetus. He was the son of the mortal Danaë and the god Zeus, and the half-brother and great grandfather of Heracles.

Vergina is best known as the site of ancient Aigai, the first capital of Macedon. It was there when in 336 BC Philip II was assassinated in the theatre and Alexander the Great was proclaimed king. The ancient site was discovered in 1976 and the excavation unearthed the burial sites of many kings of Macedon, including the tomb of Philip II, father of Alexander the Great, which, unlike so many other tombs, had not been disturbed or looted. It is also the site of an extensive royal palace. The archaeological museum of Vergina is one of the most important museums in Greece.
