Always very hard for me to choose just one photo of Cretzschmar's Bunting. I just love this species. So photogenic, so docile, so cooperative for photographers, such a melancholic song.

Olive-tree Warbler (Hippolais olivetorum) - Sigri, Lesvos Island, Spring 2026

Some species are very special due to their elusive behavior. One of them is the Olive-tree Warbler, a species that would most probably be overlooked, since their is nothing stunning about it: grey color, scratchy warbler-like song, small size. However it is definately one of the most wanted species for birders that visit the island.

This year we found several individuals in the olive orchard around Polichnitos area. But the highlight was surprisingly in Sigri area. Wondering around the Fanoromeni stream, we heard this little cute one singing. Moments later the birds was out in the open, giving a singing crescento, almost like a Great Reed Warbler which is usually exposed and nicely perched. I have never seen such a behavior from this species: usually you just hear the bird between the olive trees and very rarely you can even seen them hopping from tree to tree.

I managed to take several shots... it was the first time ever that I could have the whole body of the bird in a photo, since it is mostly covered with olive leaves.

Every time I visit Lesvos — for the past 15 years — the first morning always begins with a visit to the Tsiknias River.

It is spring, and the tall thistles have already grown high enough for the Black-headed Buntings to choose them as their favorite singing perches. No matter how many times you see and hear these bright yellow birds — arriving in April from India to breed on Lesvos — you never get tired of them.

I always prefer the eastern bank of the river, where the morning light beautifully illuminates the vegetation. With a little patience, you can photograph the buntings perched beside the purple thorny flowers, against a lush green background.

Every spring, Lesvos becomes one of the most important destinations for birdwatchers from around the world. The uniqueness of the landscape, the magic of bird migration, and many other things that are difficult to put into words attract thousands of visitors every year.

Over the next few days, I’ll try to share a small glimpse — a very small one — of this year’s visit to the island.

Cinereous Bunting (Emberiza cineracea) — Ágra, 30/4/2026
A species that breeds nowhere else in Europe except western Lesvos.

I could have cropped the photo more tightly to show a detailed portrait of the bird. But I always prefer to leave a little “space” in the frame, so the surrounding habitat can also stand out. After all, even the colorful rocks of Lesvos — covered in lichens — are beautiful in their own way.

Golden Hours & Backlit Magic

The real magic happens when light meets silence at Lake Kerkini

Sunrise mist. Golden reflections.
Backlit wings glowing like fire. Sunsets that turn the lake into liquid bronze.

Photographing Dalmatian Pelican and Great White Pelican during golden hours is an experience beyond photography — it’s atmosphere, emotion, and timing.

We plan every session around light direction, wind, and bird movement.

With 20 years of experience, I know exactly:

• Where the sun rises relative to the colonies
• When the birds take off
• How to position for dramatic backlight
• When to wait — and when to move

And between sunrise and sunset sessions, we don’t waste time.
We explore the surrounding region — something unique to our tours — adding landscape, culture, and authentic Greek hospitality to the experience.

Private groups.
Local expertise.
True exclusivity.

Not just a photography tour.
A complete wildlife immersion.

Wallcreapers are skillfull climbers, always seen looking for food between rocky slopes. This one was surprisingly observed in Mt Penteli, not far from Athens city center, and gave us plenty of photographic opportunities.

Definately this year's highlight so far!

Close Encounters from the Boat

How close is close?

Close enough to hear the water moving under their wings.
Close enough to capture reflections, fishing action, and raw behavior — without disturbing a single bird.

Our photography takes place respectfully, from a specially arranged boat approach that allows us to work near Dalmatian Pelican colonies while they remain calm and undisturbed.

This level of access comes from:

• Two decades of experience
• Local knowledge and relationships
• Understanding bird behavior and ethical positioning
• Small, private groups only

And when we are not on the water?
We explore hidden corners of the wider region — wetlands, mountains, traditional villages — giving our guests a complete wildlife and cultural experience.

We stay in hand-picked local guesthouses.
We eat real regional food.
We travel privately.

Portrait Sessions (Dalmatian & Great White Pelicans)

Every year, we return to Lake Kerkini to photograph the majestic Dalmatian Pelican — and this year was simply spectacular.

Massive bills, piercing eyes, silver-grey plumage glowing in soft light…
And of course, the elegant Great White Pelican adding contrast and grace to our frames.

This trip is not just about “seeing” pelicans.
It’s about crafting intimate portraits at eye level — frame-filling, sharp, expressive images.

Why join us?

• 20 years of field experience with pelicans
• Local guide who knows behavior, light & positioning
• Private, small-group exclusivity
• Carefully selected local guesthouses
• Authentic local cuisine (no tourist restaurants)
• Daily exploration of surrounding areas between sessions — landscapes, wildlife & culture (something no other office offers)
