Did you know that the city of Athens owes its name to an olive tree?

According to mythology, Athena and Poseidon competed for the patronage of the city. Poseidon struck the ground and created a saltwater spring, but Athena offered something more enduring: an olive tree.

The Athenians chose Athena’s gift, and from that day forward, the city was named after her.
