Fresco of "Sappho" from Pompeii, c. 50 CE.
Sappho (b. circa 630 - 612 BCE) was a Greek lyric poet. Little is known about her life and most of her poetry has been lost, but she had an immense reputation during her time. She appears on the Alexandrian list of nine lyric poets.
"Some say the Muses are nine: how careless!
Look, there's Sappho too, from Le**os, the tenth."
(Ascribed to Plato)
