There’s a reason we love Greece in September. ☀️

The sea is still beautifully warm, the light softens, and the crowds of August begin to disappear. It’s the start of shoulder season, when places like Santorini settle into a slower rhythm and invite you to stay a little longer.

You still get the best parts of a Greek island summer, only with more space to enjoy them. 🇬🇷

Have you ever wondered why Greeks bake fanouropita when something goes missing? ✨

The tradition is connected to Saint Fanourios, whose name has long been associated with the Greek verb fanerono, meaning “to reveal.” Older miracle stories also linked the saint with finding lost animals and objects, and gradually the idea of “finding” expanded much further. People began asking Saint Fanourios to reveal not only something misplaced, but also a job, a partner, a solution, or simply a little good fortune.

Fanouropita is most commonly made around August 26 and 27, the eve and feast day of Saint Fanourios, but the custom is not limited to those dates.

The cake is traditionally brought to church to be blessed and then shared. That act of sharing is an essential part of the tradition. Most versions are also fasting-friendly, made without eggs or dairy, with common ingredients including olive oil, orange, cinnamon, raisins, and nuts.

And while you may hear that it must contain 7, 9, or 11 ingredients, there is no single official recipe or church rule requiring a specific number.

A beautiful example of how faith, food, memory, and everyday life come together in Greek tradition. 🇬🇷

Why choose Zagori for a group trip instead of another week on the islands? ⛰️

Because here, the experience looks very different.

Think stone villages tucked into the mountains of Epirus, historic mansions reimagined as boutique guesthouses, centuries-old footbridges spanning clear green rivers, forest trails, and long shared dinners built around local food and wine.

For friends who want more than a beach-and-pool routine, Zagori offers time together in one of Greece’s most distinctive landscapes. 🌿🍷

There is another side to Mykonos beyond the beach clubs and nightlife. 💙

A private villa overlooking the Aegean. Breakfast in Ano Mera before the day gets busy. A boat to a secluded cove. An early walk through Chora while the streets are still quiet.

At Greece Insiders, we design journeys around these details: the right places, the right timing, and the local knowledge that can completely change how an island feels.

A fortress town built for going slow. 🏰

Connected to the Peloponnese by a single causeway, Monemvasia feels wonderfully removed from the pace of everyday life. Inside its walls, cars disappear and narrow cobblestone lanes lead between Byzantine stone buildings, small terraces and unexpected views of the sea.

For senior travelers who value history, atmosphere and the freedom to explore without rushing, Monemvasia offers something increasingly rare: a destination where taking your time feels like the whole point.

Walk a little. Stop for coffee. Look out to sea. Continue when you feel like it.

Every August 15th, Greece celebrates one of the most significant days of the year: the Dormition of the Virgin Mary, known throughout the country as Dekapentavgoustos or the Feast of Panagia. 🇬🇷💙

Often described as Greece’s “Summer Easter,” the day brings together faith, family and centuries-old traditions.

Churches welcome worshippers for morning liturgies, while villages and islands prepare for lively panigiria filled with traditional music, dancing, shared meals and local wine. 🎶🍷

It is also an important day of pilgrimage, particularly on Tinos and Paros, where thousands gather to honor the Virgin Mary. And across the country, Marias, Marios, Panagiotis and Panagiotas celebrate their name days with family and friends.

For travelers, August 15th is a chance to experience a side of Greece that goes far beyond its beaches: a celebration rooted in community, tradition and shared identity.

Χρόνια Πολλά to everyone celebrating! 💙

There is a version of Greece in August that does not involve elbowing for a spot on the sand, and it looks a lot like Sifnos.

This island has built its identity around craft and pace rather than crowds. Pottery has been made here for generations, and in Apollonia you can still watch a potter's hands shape clay the way theirs were taught.

The food follows the same unhurried logic: revithada, the local chickpea stew, cooks low and slow, best enjoyed on a taverna terrace in Artemonas with bougainvillea overhead and nowhere else to be. Even the landscape rewards patience, a footpath linking hilltop chapels above the island, and a small cove at Vathi where one wooden boat is often the only company.

For travelers who want peak season without the peak season feeling, this is exactly the kind of island our local experts point to first. Discover more about planning a personalized trip to Sifnos.
