The August Full Moon Night, or Avgoustiatiki Panselinos, is an annual tradition when archaeological sites and museums across Greece stay open after dark, with free admission and cultural programming at participating venues.

As Greece celebrates Dekapentavgoustos, the Feast of the Dormition of the Virgin Mary, many Athenians leave for the islands and hometowns, giving the capital an unusually calm rhythm.

It’s one of those rare days when you can wander through central Athens with fewer crowds, visit the Acropolis and major museums, or step into a historic Byzantine church for the morning liturgy. ⛪️🏛️

And if the city feels too still? Head south for a swim along the Athenian Riviera or continue to Cape Sounion for a late-summer escape by the sea. ☀️

Meteora is one of Greece’s most extraordinary destinations, but it is best experienced with a little planning. ⛰️
