Athens in September offers warm days, cooler evenings and a slower rhythm after the August exodus.

At Silk House in Metaxourgeio, you are close to the Acropolis, Kerameikos and the city’s cultural life, yet still able to return to a peaceful, private home.

This is the month for early walks, late lunches, gallery visits, sea swims and evenings in neighbourhood cafés around Avdi Square.

Our new guest guide to Athens in September includes practical packing advice, travel tips, local favourites and easy day trips to Vouliagmeni or Aegina.

The laiki told me what to cook today. 💜

Figs are in season in Greece, and right now the stalls at our local Athens laiki are overflowing with them.

Soft. Fragrant. Ridiculously sweet.

Naturally, I bought too many. 😂

So I came home and made a warm, rustic fig crumble.

And this is exactly what I love about the laiki: you don’t necessarily arrive knowing what you’re going to cook.

You wander.
You look.
You taste.
You see what nature has decided is ready.

And somehow, the menu writes itself.

It’s also one of my favourite ways to experience Athens beyond the guidebooks. 🇬🇷

Shop where the locals shop.
Eat what’s in season.
Take it home.
Make something delicious.

Sometimes that’s the Athens memory you end up keeping. 💙

Save this for your next trip to Athens.

Kypseli’s theatrical heritage lives on in more than its theatres. It appears in restored interiors, Art Deco treasures and memories of 1970s evenings out.

Our latest Halo story follows the neighbourhood from its glamorous 1970s theatre scene to Athens Broadway’s restoration. It celebrates Fanari’s vintage costume jewellery and the Kypseli women, that helped define its character.

Discover Kypseli’s living archive, then stay at The Hive for an Athens experience rooted in local history, culture and considered design.

Not every Athens stay has to be “next to the Acropolis”

Sometimes, the most memorable days happen in the streets just beyond the
postcard. At The Hive in Kypseli, your guest experience in Athens starts with simple, everyday rituals.

You step out to Byzantion bakery for warm cheese pies and fresh bread, sharing the morning queue with neighbours. You spend Sundays at Kypseli Municipal Market, tasting olives and honey, learning how this 1953 landmark has become a cultural and community hub. And again and again, you find yourself walking Fokionos Negri Boulevard, watching children play, friends meet and local life unfold at its own pace.

This week’s article, “Kypseli Guest Experience: Living Athens Through The Hive”,
explores what it feels like to stay in a real neighbourhood, with time to notice the
details.

If you’re drawn to multicultural daily life, revived old institutions and independent
creative spaces, this is the side of Athens you may have been looking for.

Is Metaxourgeio really as unsafe as people say?

Whenever someone books The Silk House, this question usually follows.

And I completely understand why.

The internet tells one story.

The locals often tell another.

The truth sits somewhere in between.

That's exactly why I wrote this article.

If you're planning a trip to Athens and wondering whether Metaxourgeio is the right neighbourhood for you, I hope this helps you see it through a different lens.

At The Halo Collection, we talk about the guest, the home and the neighbourhood as three rings. The Hill residence in Lycabettus is our home ring in Athens: a quiet, stylish, one bedroom apartment at the foot of Mount Lycabettus. Here, micro routines and repeatable days help guests feel safe, grounded and fully themselves, whether they arrive with presentations to finish, research deadlines or a list of neighbourhood streets to explore. If we can offer you that sense of sanctuary whenever life brings you to Athens, then the Hill has done what it was designed to do.

Some neighbourhoods are beautiful. Others tell stories.

Lycabettus is one of those places.

From The Hill, our Halo Collection home beneath the pine trees, Lycabettus is part of our everyday life. Every time we walk its paths, it reminds us that Athens is a city best discovered slowly.

The climb begins with curiosity. As you make your way through the pine trees, the city gradually unfolds beneath you until you are standing above Athens, taking in the Acropolis, the Saronic Gulf and a skyline that has inspired generations before us.

Halfway up the hill sits Prasini Tenta, a café ouzeria that has welcomed Athenians since 1931. Long before Lycabettus became one of the city's most photographed viewpoints, people came here to enjoy simple home cooked food, share meze, sip ouzo and spend time together.

Places like Prasini Tenta were never just about the food. They were about parea, the joy of being in good company, where conversations, laughter and stories were shared over simple meals and a glass of ouzo.

Many of these traditional places have disappeared over the years, making the ones that remain even more special. They are a reminder that some of the richest experiences in Athens are not found in museums, but around a table, in a neighbourhood, listening to the stories that have been passed from one generation to the next.

That is what we love most about Lycabettus.

When you stay at The Hill, you are not simply visiting another part of Athens. You are slowing down long enough to become part of its story.

When Is Graffiti Vandalism, and When Is It Art?

When I first arrived in Athens from Singapore, the graffiti bothered me. It felt like disorder, neglect, and a city that had stopped caring for itself.

Then one morning, I arrived at The Silk House, our restored 1930s neoclassical villa in Metaxourgeio, and found someone had sprayed red paint across our facade.

I was furious.

But when I walked into the courtyard, our artist, Alex Kataras, was painting a beautiful mural on the pool wall.

Both things were happening at the same time. On the same property.

And it struck me that this is Athens in a nutshell: messy, contradictory, frustrating, creative, and deeply expressive.

I still wish our facade had been left alone. But I've stopped seeing graffiti as a sign that nobody cares.

If anything, it's evidence of the opposite.

Athens has a great deal to say, and its walls have always been part of the conversation.

I wrote more about this experience and what it taught me about Athens, street art, and the changing neighbourhood of Metaxourgeio in my latest article.

Silk House: A Sustainable Restoration Story in Metaxourgeio, Athens

What does sustainable restoration in Athens look like when it’s done with a light
touch and a lot of respect?

Silk House is our invitation into a 1930s neoclassical home in Metaxourgeio that has
been carefully brought back to life. Instead of stripping it back and starting again, we chose to conserve what was already there. Tall doors, timber frames, generous
windows, and the original floor plan that flows around a central corridor.

Inside, vintage and reclaimed pieces, restored and reupholstered, sit alongside soft
textiles and calm tones. There’s also a rare urban luxury – a private heated plunge
pool tucked into the courtyard. The result is a warm, quietly luxurious home that feels rooted in its neighbourhood and in Athens.

If you’re drawn to thoughtful design, sustainable accommodation, and places with a
real sense of story, we think you’ll enjoy discovering Silk House.
