The Spartans, the Arcadians & the struggles of today.
The Lacedemonians, today's Spartans, were Dorians who emerged in the Greek history at the end of the second millennium b.c. They established their state at the SE part of Peloponnesus based on military achievements.
In Lacedemon the women, opposing the custom in the rest of Greece, had a greater involvement in the life of the city, training equally and at the same level with men. During military conflicts they preferred to put aside the love of mother to her child against the love to their country, offering the shield to their children with the saying "Either it or on it " meaning " bring it back victoriously or return on it as dead in the battle".
The Arcadians inhabited the centre of Peloponnesus, the mythical land of Arcadia, a region identified with a plethora of symbols and traditions. they ragarded themselves as "natives" and ancient writers refer to them a springing out from the earth, relating their existence since the beginning of the World. Lycomedes the Mantinean, a furius patriot, said that the Arcadians as natives, overprulated and powerful race, had to travel their own way in order to glorify Arcadia, denying to follow the Lacedemonians or the Thebans. This and other resons kept the Arcadians and the Lacedemonians in constant conflict. In times of national danger these conflicts were put aside, as in the case of the battle of Thermopylae, in wich 2400 Arcadians with their own choise fought together with the Spartans against the Persian menace.
Today, two friends, the Arcadian Kostas Panagoulias and the Spartan Pavlos Diakoumakos, inspired by the values and the principles of their ancestors, dug in the past and decided to recreate the historical event of the "300 of Spartans March" through a modern race. They invited representatives of the world endurance runners community to participate in an athletic event to these ancients heroes who marched against their death with unique valiance, gaining immortal Honor and Memory.
