Cape Sounion at sunset in August is one of those experiences that's hard to oversell because the thing itself does all the work.

The Temple of Poseidon on its clifftop, the Aegean spread out below, the sun dropping slowly into the water while the stone turns warm and gold. The drive down the coast is half the pleasure.

The Oia sunset is one of those things that sounds like a cliché until you're actually watching it: the caldera going from gold to amber to deep red, the cliffs glowing, the whole thing reflected in the water below.

Seeing it from a boat, with the island rising above you on both sides, is a level above seeing it from the clifftop with several hundred other people doing the same thing.

A panigiri is the ultimate local festival: an entire village square packed with long tables, local wine, violins playing until 6am and everyone dancing together.

Oia at sunset is stunning, yes.

But Santorini is also Pyrgos, the medieval village on the highest hill of the island that most people drive straight past. It's Megalochori, quiet and unhurried, with wine tasting in a cave. It's the interior of the island, completely unlike anything on the coast.
