The Trireme Olympias is a modern reconstruction of an ancient Greek trireme. It was built in Greece between 1985 and 1987 to show how the famous warships of ancient Athens looked and operated.
The Olympias is about 37 metres long and has three levels of oars, with 170 rowers (who were not slaves). The ship was designed according to archaeological evidence and ancient descriptions.
It was mainly used for experiments and demonstrations, helping historians and researchers understand how ancient Greek sailors travelled and fought at sea. It has also carried the Olympic Flame!🔥
Today, the Olympias is an important symbol of ancient Greek naval history and technology. It shows the impressive skills of the ancient Athenians in shipbuilding and rowing.
