Mermaid of Oinousses
There is an old legend whispered among the sailors of the Aegean that the beautiful mermaid who watches over the sea was once the sister of Alexander the Great.
It is said that Alexander was given a glass filled with the sacred water of immortality. His sister, wishing to give him a beautiful gift, placed a rose inside the glass. But the magic of the water passed into the rose, granting it the gift of immortality instead.
Alexander lost his chance to become immortal, while the rose became the bearer of the sacred power.
Heartbroken by what had happened, his sister devoted herself to the sea and to Poseidon, the god of the waters. From that day onward, she became a mermaid, living between the world of mortals and the eternal world beneath the waves.
The legend says that she would appear to sailors and ask them:
“Does King Alexander live?”
Those who knew the secret would answer:
“He lives and reigns, and he rules the world!”
Hearing this, she would rejoice and allow their ships to sail safely onward. But if a sailor told her that Alexander was dead, she would become furious, stirring the sea into violent waves and terrible storms.
For the people of Oinousses, an island whose soul has always been tied to the sea, the mermaid became more than a figure from an ancient legend. She became a guardian of sailors—a symbol of love, fate, longing, and the eternal bond between those who leave the island and those who wait for their return.
And so she remains at the edge of the sea, watching over the ships that come and go, while the immortal rose lives on as a reminder that sometimes, even when destiny takes something away, it gives something eternal in return.
