Easter in Corfu 馃尫馃挏
the "first Resurrection"
After the procession of St Spyridon early in the morning of Holy Saturday, at 11 o'clock the church bells announce the "first Resurrection" and Corfiot people throw ceramic pots, called "botides", from their windows and balconies.
This is an old custom that probably bears the influence of the Venetians, who threw old objects out of their houses on New Year鈥檚 day, so that the New Year would bring them many new and better things.
At midnight, Corfiots and visitors to the island go to the central squares of Corfu Town (Spianada) and the villages to celebrate the Resurrection.
