July 9th is a day of remembrance and reflection each year for Santorini and its people.
I would say that, deep in our minds, we must always carry the belief that nothing truly belongs to us.
In a single moment, everything can turn to ruins.
That is why we must remain simply:
“Human.”

What happened back then, from a scientific perspective, is explained below by
Evi Nomikou,
Professor at the relevant department of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA):

“In the marine area northeast of Santorini lies the dominant Amorgos fault, with a total length of 75 km. A segment of it was activated in the early hours of July 9th, 1956, triggering one of the largest recorded tsunamis (>20 m). It caused damage to 3,200 buildings (~500 of them completely destroyed), while 54 people lost their lives in Santorini and around 100 were injured.

The first earthquake had a magnitude of approximately 7.8R followed 13 minutes later by a strong aftershock of about 7.2R (possibly less), deeper (40–95 km) and closer to Santorini.

The marine research we’ve been conducting for years in the area, using robotic equipment, has helped us identify a seafloor displacement of 9.8–16.8 meters during the seismic event.

And when you witness the image of the fault, as shown in the video published by our team (Leclerc et al., 2024 — Large seafloor rupture caused by the 1956 Amorgos tsunamigenic earthquake, Greece), you begin to grasp the power of nature and humanity’s inability to control it.

Proper information from scientists—who have mapped the region’s active faults through multiple oceanographic missions and analyze geological hazards—the avoidance of panic caused by ‘alarming headlines,’ the continuation of marine research, and appropriate infrastructure will allow us to be better prepared.

📸 The incredible photograph was taken from the archaeological site of Ancient Thera¹ in the early 1960s, just a few years after the great earthquake². The two men sitting on the left, at the edge of the stonework—probably beneath a suspended monastery—are friends of American philanthropist and photographer Robert McCabe³.

To the right, along what was then a deserted area by the sea, lies Perissa. This was before the “development.” Today, this entire area—with its beautiful beach, black volcanic lava, sandy seabed, and deep blue waters—is filled with buildings and umbrellas. The coastal village of the same name now stands there (~500 residents), located about 13 km from the capital, Fira.

¹ Founded by Dorian settlers in the 8th century BC, Ancient Thera is situated at an altitude of ~385 m.
² The deadly 1956 earthquake had a magnitude of 7.5 on the Richter scale.
³ Robert McCabe (a great admirer of Greece) was granted honorary Greek citizenship for promoting our country around the world through his work for the past 60 years.
