Voulismeno Aloni is a stunning natural landmark — a massive geological sinkhole surrounded by wild nature, steep rock walls, and serene silence. Despite its closeness to Heraklion city, it offers an otherworldly sense of isolation and raw Cretan beauty.
✨ The Legend: The Girl and the Voices
Many years ago, a young girl was threshing wheat on this very spot during the feast day of Prophet Elias, ignoring the sacred rest. A sudden wind rose, and voices echoed from the earth — cries, as if from people buried deep below. She tried to run, but the ground gave way, swallowing her, the animals, and all the tools. Since then, the place has been called Voulismeno Aloni, meaning “The Sunken Threshing Floor.”
Locals say that if you stand there in silence, you might hear the voices again — and feel the deep pulse of the land.
