Comet C/2023 A3, also known as Tsuchinshan-ATLAS, is a long-period comet originating from the Oort Cloud. It was discovered in January 2023 by the Purple Mountain Observatory in China and the ATLAS (Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System) project in South Africa. The comet has captured significant interest due to its potential brightness.

On September 27, 2024, the comet reached its closest approach to the Sun (perihelion), and it made its closest pass to Earth on October 12, 2024, at a distance of about 44 million miles. Around this time, it became visible to the naked eye, with a predicted peak brightness that could rival some of the most spectacular comets of the last century. Its tail, made of dust and ionized gas, has stretched several degrees across the sky, making for stunning visual display!

After its perihelion, the comet re-emerged in mid-October as an evening object, remaining visible to observers as it moves away from both the Sun and Earth .
This comet has an extremely long orbit, so it won’t be seen again for about 80,000 years, making this a rare celestial event to witness.
