Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary

The Byzantine church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary is located today in the old town of Kalambaka and is the oldest preserved monument in the entire region. Originally built in the 4th or 5th century on the ruins of an older pagan temple dedicated to Apollo, it is a basilica style and is one of the oldest surviving early Christian churches in Greece. During the many centuries of its history, it underwent successive interventions and changes, mainly during the period from the 9th to the 12th century.
