Dear friends, dear guests,
We felt the need to write this post, following the wildfires near Ierapetra and the substantial worries that they raised among people all over the World. We thought that it would be necessary to keep you correctly informed about the situation.

The view of a burning hill and the enormous volume of smoke raising to the sky provokes in the first place great shock, fear and anxiety. The prospect of the fire approaching houses and properties terrifies even more and of course, there are people suffering and losing their property even if this is only a small olive grove.

But, such an incident gives food to the medias and to all these individuals looking for making themselves important in Facebook. A wave of exaggeration is created and proliferated.

Therefore, for your information:

Our area (Koutsounari) was not touched at all by the wildfires. The fire passed some 1-2 kilometers away.
The locality Ferma (next village to the east of Koutsounari) is untouched, as well (even if in the medias it was considered as ‘eliminated’!).
In Agia Fotia there have been severe damages up on the hills but the area next to beautiful bay stays green,
Everything else to the east remains untouched in green color.
The severe damage occurred up on the hills, climbing to the place of ‘Psichron’ and ‘Schinokapsala’. Unfortunately the dense pines forest there may have been burned.
The total surface which was finally touched by the fire may be (to my estimation) around 3km wide (the side of the sea) to 3km long (up to the hills). So, Crete is not burning, not even Ierapetra !
All places you know and you love like the long beach in Koutsounari, the Achlia beach, etc remain the same clean and beautiful and all nice restaurants on the beach operate as usually.

Of course, we had been quite anxious and worried, but, finally, it finished. Life and the holidays here go on as usual.

Allow me to add, as well, that the Greek security system (fire department, police, civil protection, etc) showed an amazing readiness and effectivity. I was really astonished to see that in real-time.

Please, ignore all these fake news or exaggerations.
