Incuse (concave) Chaos is a rare natural monument, located in the area of Kamariza, near Lavrion city in Attica. It is a heart-shaped crater and legend has it that it was created by a meteorite fall in the late 18th or early 19th century. This fact has not been scientifically proven. It is estimated that the crater was created when the roof of a cavern collapsed. The area is also full of ancient underground mining tunnels that are geologically related to the site.
Its depth reaches 55 meters and its diameter is 120 meters. The interior is even more interesting, as it includes metals of various kinds and rare rocks. One of them is galenite.
More than 431 different minerals were identified in the region, which has been known for mining since antiquity. Lavrion mines occupy an area of approximately 120 square kilometers and they are connected with the development of the ancient Greek civilization.
Chaos is located within the National Park of Sounion, where you can spend your day in the Aleppo pine forest. The National Park is ideal for archaeological and geological sightseeing.
The Chaos area is a meeting point for climbers and speleologist. The day we visited Chaos, there were people practising slacklining there.
