A visit to the Meteora Monasteries provides a unique perspective on nature's magnificence in conjunction with history, architecture, and man's eternal desire to connect with the Divine. Meteora's cliffs were regarded as a perfect place to achieve absolute isolation since early Christian times. A place where people can find peace and harmony, thus supporting humanity's eternal struggle for spiritual ascension.

With these ancient monuments occupying their picks, the six active Meteora monasteries create a truly inspiring and sensational setting of overwhelming rock formations. Meteora has essentially become a preservation ark for the 2000-year-old Christian Orthodox creed. Only six of the original 24 monasteries are still active and open to the public today.

Between 50,000 and 5,000 years ago, caves near Meteora were continuously inhabited. The oldest known example of a built structure, a stone wall that blocked two-thirds of the entrance to the Theopetra cave, was built 23,000 years ago, most likely as a barrier against cold winds – the Earth was in the midst of an ice age at the time – and many Paleolithic and Neolithic artifacts of human occupation have been discovered within the caves.
