When visiting Kefalonia you must do a short boat trip with the singing Oarsman in Melissani Cave, located just outside Sami 🛶
The cave is one of Kefalonia’s most remarkable natural attractions and was formed when part of the roof collapsed centuries ago, allowing sunlight to stream in and illuminate the crystal-clear water in vivid shades of blue and turquoise.
According to Greek mythology, the cave was home to the nymph Melissani, from whom it takes its name.
Archaeological discoveries inside the cave suggest it was once an important place of worship in ancient times.
The most spectacular time to visit is around midday on a sunny day, when the sunlight creates the cave’s famous glowing effect on the water.
