Athens isn’t just Greece’s capital—it’s where democracy began 🏛️.
In the 5th century BCE, citizens were expected to participate in public life or face a fine. The city’s name comes from Athena, who won a contest against Poseidon by gifting the olive tree.
Before Athens became the capital in 1834, that role belonged to Nafplio. With over 3,400 years of history, Athens stands as one of the oldest cities in the world. The Acropolis still overlooks the city, reminding visitors of its ancient strength and influence.
Theaters once shaped Athenian society—and with over 150 stages today 🎭, Athens has more than any other city in the world. Even the metro construction revealed archaeological finds now visible to commuters 🚇. Athens also made its mark on literature—UNESCO named it World Book Capital in 2018 📚.
The Athens Marathon honors Pheidippides, who ran from Marathon to Athens to deliver news of victory. His story still inspires runners today.
At Athens Insiders, we bring these facts to life through local-led private tours. History doesn’t have to be distant—walk it, learn it, and experience it with us.
