This is a great opportunity to discover some of Crete’s most important historical sites while saving the usual admission fees.

Most people know Sissi as a beautiful little harbour and a much-loved holiday destination in Crete.But how many know its real story?

Its history reaches back to the Minoan period, more than 4,500 years ago. The name “Sisi” appears in a Venetian document as early as 1391. In the 19th century, its tiny natural harbour was used to export olive oil and carobs. During the Cretan Revolution, it became a landing point for supplies — and in 1867, the steamship Arkadi evacuated 124 women and children from here.

Perhaps most surprisingly, in the 1920 census Sissi had just three recorded inhabitants.

From an almost empty harbour to the village and international holiday destination we know today, Sissi has undergone an extraordinary transformation.

I have tried to bring together the documented history of Sissi — from the Minoan settlement to the development of modern tourism — using archaeological, historical and archival sources.

For everyone who loves Sissi, I hope this gives you a chance to discover another side of the place we know today.
