What is the Parthenon doing in Germany?
Surprisingly, this isn't Greece!
This is Walhalla, a magnificent monument overlooking the Danube near Regensburg, in Bavaria, Germany.
Inspired by the Parthenon in Athens, Walhalla was commissioned by King Ludwig I of Bavaria and inaugurated on October 18, 1842.
Built to honor distinguished personalities of German history and culture, it remains one of Bavaria's most remarkable architectural landmarks.
The day after tomorrow marks its 184th anniversary! 🎉
A fascinating reminder of how ancient Greek architecture has inspired monuments far beyond Greece's borders.
From the Acropolis of Athens to the hills of Bavaria, history and architecture connect cultures across Europe.
