Never know who you’ll meet during the olive harvest.

In Greek mythology, the praying mantis symbolized a “prophet” or “seer,” holding supernatural abilities.

The name “mantis” itself means “prophet” or “seer” in Greek.

Strangely enough, in Greek they are called αλογάκι της Παναγίας (alogaki ‘‘tis Panagias) = Horse of the Virgin Mary.

October 28, 1940, 3 AM: An Italian ambassador delivers Mussolini’s ultimatum to Greece–

‘Surrender in three hours or face invasion.’

The response? ‘Then it is war.’

By dawn, as Italian troops crossed the border, Greeks had one word on their lips: Όχι - NO. Not ‘maybe we can negotiate.’ Not ‘let’s think about it.’

Solely NO.

They weren’t confused about the odds. Italy was a superpower. Greece was outgunned and alone.

But the calculation was simple: some things you don’t negotiate. Freedom. Dignity. The right to self-determination.

Greece didn’t just *say* no, they meant it. They pushed Mussolini’s army back into Albania and inspired a world that had been watching tyrants win unopposed.

Today is Oxi Day.

It’s a reminder that the most powerful word in democracy is still NO… when you mean it, when you stand behind it, when you refuse to surrender what matters.

Every morning now, the trees shimmer a little differently. Silver, patient, waiting.

In just a few weeks, from November 14, we’ll gather amongst them for Wild Roots Embodied, our olive harvest retreat in Sparta.

This isn’t a wellness escape. It’s a remembering.
A return to the hands, to the soil, to stories that have lived here for thousands of years.

We’ll pick with our hands. Harvest wild greens. Make herbal oils and salves. Trace myths back to the land that birthed them.

It’s part harvest, part homecoming.

If you’ve been craving rootedness—real, messy, alive—this is your invitation.

This is intimate agriculture: sun-ripened fruit plucked by hand, skin to skin with the land, fingers sliding over smooth olives before they’re crushed into gold. It’s the soft thud of fruit hitting the nets, the slow pour of fresh oil catching the light just right, the smell of wild herbs clinging to your clothes. It’s not a harvest. It’s a homecoming. If this day feels like exactly what you need in your life, let’s connect:

Imagine gently fluttering your eyes open as the sun makes its way past the peaks of Mt. Taygetus and into your bedroom.

The scent of chamomile, mountain tea, and other local herbs finds its way to your nose, followed quickly by local honey, freshly made cheeses, and seasonal fruits. Your stomach begins to rumble.

You indulge in a luscious morning stretch before curling back into yourself for a brief moment, to set an intention for your day.

Out of the corner of your eye, you spot a piece of paper, just in front of your door. You walk over to it with anticipation and open up the note, eager to see today’s reflection prompt and a reminder of the day’s events.

The words read, “as you move through your day, which plants beg you to touch them? Do they feel like you think they will? When in your life have you been drawn to something, only to be completely surprised by what you find when you get up close?”

You breathe in that thought, and turn the paper over to see today’s road map.

You fold the paper and place it into your foraging bag. The day is ready for you, and you can’t wait to see what unexpected beauty and revelations it will reveal.

As she reaches out to touch the edge of the ancient tree, a surge of memories rushes through her—a montage of faces, landscapes, and animals that have no logical place in her mind.

The adventure is beginning.
