Ginkaku-ji, the Silver Pavilion, is said to be a perfect embodiment of the Japanese aesthetic of wabi-sabi—the art of finding beauty in imperfection. This beautiful zen temple, officially named Jisho-ji, is most often referred to as the Silver Pavilion even though it is not actually silver.

While beautiful year-round, the fall colors are particularly impressive. Best known for its stone gardens and simple buildings, this fifteenth century temple was originally a villa. The gardens are spread out over two levels and can be enjoyed by walking in a circular route around the temple grounds.

The Arashiyama Bamboo Grove is one of the top sights to see in Kyoto. Tucked in the Arashiyama district amongst temples and shrines, the bamboo grove is a lush forest filled with soaring stalks of bamboo. Stroll down paths lined with endless rows of bamboo and feel like you’ve been transported into another world.

This serene walk is the perfect escape from the busier parts of your trip. The grove is open 24 hours a day with no admission fee, and should make your list of must-see places.

Sake anyone? This trademark Japanese drink is made from only four main ingredients - rice, yeast, koji, and water. Its flavors range from sweet to extremely dry, and the fermentation process and alcohol content of sake are similar to that of wine. One big difference is that it has about half the acidity of wine, no sulfates, and low levels of histamines.

As for the best temperature to enjoy sake? It can be sipped cold, served warm or even enjoyed at room temperature. The type of sake you have will determine the recommended serving temperature.

An important side note – “sake” in Japanese can refer to any alcoholic beverage, and the drink we know as sake in the west can be ordered by asking for “nihonshu” in Japan.

Did you know the first kimono dates back over one thousand years? The beginnings of the kimono go back to the start of the Heian Period in 794 when straight cuts of fabric were sewn together to create something that fit every body type. By the Kamakura Period in 1185, the kimono had become an everyday clothing choice, and the colors signified seasons, gender, or even political and family ties.

The art of kimono-making grew into a specialized craft during the Edo Period, with some kimonos being considered a work of art. Although kimonos are no longer an everyday choice, this traditional dress is still worn for special occasions, such as weddings, funerals, and tea ceremonies.

No trip to Japan would be complete without at least a glimpse of Mount Fuji. Japan's tallest mountain is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is visited by an estimated 300,000+ adventurous hikers each year.

You don't have to reach the summit to fully experience the beauty of the mountain though. From skyscrapers with observation decks to beautiful lakes that offer great day hikes, there are many places offering you a stunning view. The best time to see the mountain is early morning, especially on a crisp winter day when there isn't a could in the sky!

Fushimi Inari Taisha is a must see in southern Kyoto. This important Shinto shrine is famed for its collection of torii gates, known as Senbon Torii.

Thousands of the torii gates wind their way up sacred Mount Inari, and the shifting sunlight as you walk the path is truly spellbinding.

Try to get an early start to beat some of the crowds at this popular destination. There are A LOT of stairs involved if you want to go to the top, so be prepared.

People of all ages have gathered at the shrine to pray for bountiful harvests, success in business, and for their wishes and dreams to come true. You can see the writing on each torri with the name of the person or company who dedicated the torii to the shrine.
