As a local tour guide, I often see cruise passengers wondering whether they should book a private tour independently or take an excursion through their cruise line.

So, instead of telling you what you should choose, here is the honest comparison.

🚌 EXCURSION THROUGH THE CRUISE LINE

Advantages:
✅ Everything is organized through the cruise line
✅ You know that the excursion is connected directly with your ship
✅ You travel with other passengers
✅ The cruise line handles the organization and timing
✅ If something changes with the ship's schedule, the cruise line is already involved

Disadvantages:
❌ You are following a fixed itinerary
❌ You have limited flexibility with the time you spend at each place
❌ You are travelling with a larger group
❌ The experience is less personalized
❌ You may spend part of your valuable time waiting for the group

🚐 PRIVATE TOUR WITH A LOCAL OPERATOR

The cable car can become extremely busy, especially when several cruise ships are in port at the same time.

But there is something many first-time visitors don't know:

For all cruise lines, there are specific days and time periods when passengers can book their tender and, depending on the cruise line's system, aim to be among the first five tender groups.

This can make a BIG difference to your day in Santorini.

And no, there is no reason to arrive on the island already stressed about the cable car queue.

Santorini is an incredible island, but during busy cruise days it also requires a little planning, patience and understanding.

🇬🇷 SANTORINI IS NOT JUST OIA & THE SUNSET.
If you are coming to Santorini, save this post.
Not an advertisement , just a few things worth knowing from a local tour guide who knows the island beyond the usual tourist stops.

📍 Firostefani – The Three Bells of Fira
That famous blue dome with the three bells? It’s in Firostefani, just north of Fira. One of the classic caldera views and one of the most photographed spots on the island.

📍 Imerovigli
Often called the “Balcony of the Aegean.” Sitting high above the caldera, it offers spectacular views towards the volcano, Thirasia and the Aegean Sea.

📍 Fira – The Heart of Santorini
Fira is the island’s capital and main center. Caldera views, shops, restaurants, churches and the famous cliffside promenade all come together here.

📍 Oia
Yes, Oia is beautiful. But here is something visitors sometimes discover too late: timing matters. When several cruise ships are in Santorini, Oia can become extremely busy.

📍 Megalochori
If you want to see the more traditional side of Santorini, don't overlook Megalochori. Quiet alleys, old houses, wine culture and a completely different atmosphere from the busy caldera villages.

📍 Pyrgos
A beautiful traditional village built around a Venetian castle. Walk higher into the village and you’ll discover some wonderful panoramic views across the island.

📍 Profitis Ilias
At approximately 567 metres, Mount Profitis Ilias is the highest point of Santorini. On a clear day, the view stretches across a huge part of the island and the Aegean Sea.

📍 Red Beach
One of Santorini’s most recognizable volcanic landscapes. The red and dark volcanic cliffs create a dramatic contrast with the Aegean Sea.

📍 Perivolos – The Black Beach
On the southern coast, Perivolos is famous for its long stretch of black volcanic sand, crystal-clear Aegean waters and relaxed beach atmosphere. It is a completely different side of Santorini compared with the caldera villages.

And here is the part many visitors don't realize:

Santorini is a small island — but every area tells a completely different story.

The caldera is spectacular.
The beaches are volcanic.
The villages have history.
The volcano shaped everything.
The wine has a story.
And sometimes the best places are the ones you would never find on your own.
