Olympus Riviera: The land of the Olympian Gods

Olympus Riviera stretches on a 70-km coastline along the Olympus Mountain range, on the Thermaic Gulf, at the northwest part of the Aegean Sea. The dramatic landscape with the high mountains that reflect their heavy shadow on the sea, was the home of the 12 Olympian Gods according to the Greek mythology.

Mount Olympus is the highest mountain in Greece with its highest peak rising the altitude of 2.917 meters. The reach biodiversity creates an environment of more than 1.800 species of plants as well as rare fauna. It is one of the oldest National Parks of the World, since 1938. In 1981, UNESCO declared Olympus a Biosphere Reserve.

The Archaeological Park of Dion where Alexander the Great sacrificed to the Gods before his campaign to Asia, the imposing medieval Castle of Platamon, the traditional mountainous villages and the seaside settlements, the trails along Enippeas River, the historical monasteries, enrich the experience of swimming under the eye of the mighty Zeus.

Meteora Rocks and Monasteries

This stunning formation of rocks is located in the heart of the mainland of Greece, in Thessaly Region. 60 million years ago, Meteora was covered by sea. The current geological phenomenon was gradually created by tectonic deformation and erosion.

In the fertile valley of Kalambaka Town, some 800 sandstone rocks are rising up to 400-meter height from the ground. In the 14th century, these impressive rock formations were named “Meteora”, by the founder of the first monastery, Saint Athanasios. “Meteora” means “suspended in the air” and this is how the cluster of monasteries has been called ever since.

The first hermits were settled in the natural caves of the rocks, in the 11th-12th century. After the establishment of the Great Meteoron Monastery, the monks founded more between the 14th and the 16th century. In total, the monks built twenty-four monasteries on the peaks of the rocks, to protect themselves and avoid prosecution by the Ottomans.

Without access to the rocks, the workers and construction materials were transferred with the use of ropes, long ladders, baskets and nets. People were literally left in the hands of God. Inspired by the byzantine architecture, decorated by well known painters and craftsmen, the monasteries became an important religious pilgrimage.

Today, six of the twenty-four monasteries are active. Meteora was added to the UNESCO ‘World Heritage List” in 1988, as a mixed site, both for the natural environment and the cultural significance.

Zagoria Villages: A cluster of 46 mountainous gems

Zagorohoria or Zagoria are located at the north-western edge of Pindos mountain range, in Epirus Region. The spots where the settlements had been founded, were selected by the ancient tribes a couple of thousands of years ago, according to the natural protection they provided.

From the 15th century and throughout the Ottoman occupation, the area enjoyed a privileged status, that allowed the economy, trade, education and culture to flourish. Forty-six villages have been preserving their traditional architecture and urban planning, ever since.

The villages are connected by a network of stone-cobbled walking paths, arched bridges and staircases. The combination of traditional historical villages, network of trails and landscapes of Pindos with the rare flora and fauna, enlisted the area in UNESCO as “Zagori Cultural Landscape”, in 2023.

With an area of 2.000 m2, Northern Pindos is the largest terrestrial National Park in Grece. Aoos River crosses Vikos Gorge, in the center of the park. The gorge has been listed as the world’s “deepest relative to its width”, by the Guinness Book of Records.

Zagoria villages are just one hour away from the beautiful lake-side city of Ioannina and the archaeological site of Dodoni – the oldest ancient Greek oracle. This meld of culture, history, nature, local gastronomy, villages and city, is the definition of authentic mainland Greece.

Xanthi City: The city of a thousand colors

Xanthi is a Thracian city in Northern Greece, built between Lake Vistonida and the Nestos River. It is first mentioned under its current name in the late 8th century AD.

During the Byzantine era, Xanthi became a commercial and cultural crossroad between the East and the West. When the region was occupied by the Ottomans, the city became a refuge for the Christian populations of the surrounding settlements.

In the 19th and 20th centuries, the major income of the citizens of Xanthi was coming from to***co cultivation and process. The variety of Xanthi’s to***co was one of the finest and its reputation extended the limits of the Ottoman Empire and the Sultan. The mansions of the old town reflect the wealth of that period.

Kastoria City: The lady of the lake

Kastoria is one of the most beautiful cities in Northern Greece. It stretches along Lake Orestiada and takes its name after the beavers of the lake. Traces of human habitation date back to the Neolithic era.

The city was conquered by the Romans and flourished as a cultural, religious and commercial center during the Byzantine era. The heyday of this period is visible in the forty well-preserved Byzantine churches.

For more than five centuries, the economy of Kastoria was thriving due to the fur manufacturing and trading. There are plenty of mansions from the 17th and 18th century, built according to the traditional Macedonian architecture and decorated by specialized craftsmen.

The traditional quarters with the cobblestoned routes and the old churches, the thematic museums, the round of the lake which is considered one of the best driving or walking experiences in Greece and the local food and wine, compose an authentic travel experience.

Kavala City: Overlooking the Aegean Sea

Kavala is located in Northern Greece, nestled between the slopes of the surrounding hills and the northern coast of the Aegean Sea.

The first settlement was founded in the late 7th century BC. Due to its harbor, geographic position and proximity to the gold-bearing Mount Pangaion, the city became an important commercial and cultural center during the era of King Philip II – father of Alexander the Great, and a major port of the Roman Empire. In 45 AD, Apostle Paul visited Kavala on his way to Philippi and founded the first Christian community in Europe.

The archaeological site and museum of Philippi (UNESCO), the Holy Baptistery of Saint Lydia, the Roman aqueduct – landmark of the city of Kavala, are reminders of the city’s ancient past.

The Byzantine era and the Ottoman rule, gifted the city with important sites, such as the Castle, the Imaret, the Mohammed Ali Museum and the old town.

The 20th century was the golden age of Kavala. The booming of the to***co industry and the population growth formed an economically prosperous middle class. The thematic To***co Museum and the neoclassical mansions in the city center are witnesses to this period.

Today, Kavala is a picturesque walkable city with plenty of activity options nearby: local wineries, long sandy beaches, ancient sites and getaway destinations such as the island of Thassos.

Doucas Tours & Travel offers holiday packages in the city of Kavala, all year round.
