Our recent Thessaloniki Sightseeing Tour welcomed a wonderful group of travelers from the United States for a day filled with history, culture, authentic flavors, and unforgettable moments. Together, we explored the city's most iconic landmarks, hidden corners, and vibrant neighborhoods while uncovering the fascinating stories that have shaped Thessaloniki over more than 2,300 years.

From the historic churches and Byzantine monuments to the charming streets of Ano Poli (Old Town), our guests experienced the city's unique blend of civilizations, cultures, and traditions. Along the way, we shared stories of ancient Macedonia, the Roman Empire, the Byzantine era, the Ottoman period, and modern-day Greece.

Of course, no Greek experience would be complete without authentic local cuisine. During a relaxing lunch overlooking the city, our guests enjoyed traditional Greek dishes, local hospitality, and lively conversations that transformed new friendships into lasting memories.

Μεγάλη Παρασκευή στη Θεσσαλονίκη: Εκεί που η ιστορία συναντά την πίστη.

Η χθεσινή Μεγάλη Παρασκευή (10 Απριλίου 2026) στη Θεσσαλονίκη χαρακτηρίστηκε από το εντυπωσιακό και κατανυκτικό "αντάμωμα" πέντε Επιταφίων στην πλατεία Αριστοτέλους. Πρόκειται για μια πρωτοβουλία που καθιερώθηκε ως θεσμός τα τελευταία τρία χρόνια, συγκεντρώνοντας χιλιάδες πιστούς στην καρδιά της πόλης.

​Οι πέντε Επιτάφιοι που συμμετείχαν στην κοινή δέηση προέρχονται από ιστορικούς ναούς και μονές του κέντρου:

1. ​Μητροπολιτικός Ιερός Ναός Αγίου Γρηγορίου του Παλαμά: Ο κεντρικός Επιτάφιος της Μητρόπολης, συνοδευόμενος από τον Μητροπολίτη Θεσσαλονίκης Φιλόθεο, αγήματα του στρατού και τη φιλαρμονική του Δήμου.

2. ​Καθεδρικός Ιερός Ναός της Του Θεού Σοφίας: Ένας από τους πιο ιστορικούς και μεγαλοπρεπείς ναούς της πόλης.

3. ​Ιερός Ναός Παναγίας των Χαλκέων: Ο εμβληματικός "κόκκινος" ναός της βυζαντινής περιόδου.

4. Ιερά Μονή Αγίας Θεοδώρας: Η γυναικεία μονή στον πεζόδρομο της Αγίας Σοφίας, που προσδίδει έναν ιδιαίτερο μοναστικό τόνο στη λιτανεία.

5. Ιερός Ναός Αγίου Νικολάου του Τρανού: Ένας ιστορικός ναός της περιοχής που συμμετέχει σταθερά σε αυτή τη σύναξη.

​Οι πέντε πομπές συναντήθηκαν στο ύψος της οδού Μητροπόλεως στην πλατεία Αριστοτέλους. Εκεί, μέσα σε απόλυτη σιωπή και υπό το φως χιλιάδων κεριών, εψάλησαν τροπάρια του Επιταφίου Θρήνου, ενώ πραγματοποιήθηκε κοινή δέηση.

Οι φιλαρμονικές του Στρατού και του Δήμου πλαισίωσαν μουσικά την τελετή με πένθιμα εμβατήρια, δημιουργώντας μια ατμόσφαιρα που συνδύαζε τη θρησκευτική κατάνυξη με την ιστορική βαρύτητα της πόλης.

The Tower of Ouranoupolis, also known as the Prosforion Tower, is the most iconic landmark of the coastal village of Ouranoupolis in Halkidiki, northern Greece. Standing proudly by the sea at the entrance to the peninsula of Mount Athos, the tower dates back to the 14th century and was originally built by the monks of the nearby Vatopedi Monastery.

Constructed as part of a defensive complex, the tower served to protect the monastery’s estates and harbor from pirates and invading forces that frequently threatened the region during the Byzantine and Ottoman periods. Its strong stone walls and strategic seaside position made it an ideal watchtower and fortified residence.

Over the centuries, the tower has undergone several restorations and has served various roles. In the early 20th century it was briefly used as a residence by refugees and later by the family of British archaeologist and writer Sydney Loch, who helped establish the modern village of Ouranoupolis.

Today, the Tower of Ouranoupolis operates as a small museum, showcasing artifacts, historical photographs, and exhibits that tell the story of the area and its close relationship with Mount Athos.

Surrounded by a scenic seaside setting, it remains one of the most photographed monuments in Halkidiki and a symbolic gateway to the spiritual world of Mount Athos.

The Holy Monastery of Agia Anastasia Farmakolytria is one of the most important historic monasteries in northern Greece, located about 30 km southeast of Thessaloniki, near the village of Vasilika.

The monastery was founded in 1522 by Saint Theonas of Thessaloniki, who later became the Archbishop of Thessaloniki. It is dedicated to Saint Anastasia the Pharmakolytria, a Christian martyr from the early 4th century. Her name Pharmakolytria means “the healer from poisons”, as she was believed to cure people from poisons, illnesses, and spiritual suffering.

During the Ottoman period, the monastery became an important religious and cultural center for Orthodox Christianity in Macedonia. It also played a role in preserving Greek education and spiritual life in the region. Throughout its long history, the monastery suffered several destructions and fires, but it was rebuilt each time, maintaining its historical character and importance.

Today, the monastery remains an active religious site and pilgrimage destination. Visitors can admire the katholikon (main church), traditional Byzantine-style architecture, peaceful courtyards, and sacred relics connected with Saint Anastasia.

The monastery is surrounded by beautiful natural landscapes, offering a quiet and spiritual atmosphere. For many visitors, it is not only a historical monument but also a place of faith, healing, and reflection.
