Have a very clear and strict strategy to manage fire risk. Very much now focused on prevention.

They have a forecast similar style to a U.K. pollen forecast - letting us know daily what the risk is and what rules apply.

When it’s the highest level all National Parks and footpaths are closed, BBQs are not allowed, welding prohibited, parking on grasses to protect self and land etc etc

The clearing of land is a part crucial of prevention there is an annual spring deadline when this must be done by and registered on a government database.

Controls and inspections are carried out during the prevention period.

Firefighting forces in the country consist of over 18,000 personnel. That includes about 15,500 permanent firefighters and 2,500 seasonal staff.

Volunteer involvement is huge in fire protection.Nearly 5,000 volunteer firefighters join the effort alongside official forces.There are also over 5,700 civil protection volunteers from almost 300 organisations. They help out with prevention, preparedness, and emergencies.

Aerial firefighting resources run between 80 and 85 aircraft. Nearly 50 of those are leased to increase national capabilities when fire risk is high.

Key priorities in fire safety measures include public awareness campaigns and cooperation between different agencies. Strict enforcement of fire protection regulations.

The fire prevention season begins officially on May 1st every year. The operational model leans heavily on rapid intervention.

Specialised forest firefighting units-those forest commandos-count around 1,600 members.
International cooperation happens too Under the European Civil Protection Mechanism, about 300 firefighters from several countries pitch in during fire season.

This prepositioning programme really does strengthen the ability to act fast on wildfires.

Wildfire management is constantly evolving with increased monitoring, better resource allocation, education of the public and safety campaigns.

Something special about strolling up to Kokkino Chorio Zorba’s Taverna in the village square ( you can see it from our balcony), enjoying a meal, raki , mini siropiasta style dessert and a beautiful sunset 🌅 🇬🇷 🍷 🍽️ 💞

I do like a church or a chapel on a Sunday! I’m not particularly religious - just find them calming & peaceful , a place to reflect and be grateful.

(Thinking at the moment of everyone affected by the weather events in Valencia , so incredibly sad 🙏🏻 🇪🇸 ❤️‍🩹)

Pictured here are a few shots of this is a lovely little walk - from Almyrida beach to Kera ( you can continue to Kalyves ) , it’s mainly on little backroads and paths. The starting point is a 10 minute drive from the village.

Part way you pop out onto the main road - just for a few yards . Opposite there’s a little church on the bend high above road called The Holy Church of Agios Andreas.

It actually offers a lovely resting place and a fabulous view. Driven by many many times but never appreciated its location 🇬🇷⛪️☀️
