If you're on Zakynthos around August 24th, you're witnessing something the island takes seriously. It's the feast of Saint Dionysios, the island's patron saint, and his relics are carried through the streets of Zakynthos Town in a procession that's been a tradition since 1901.

If you're on Zakynthos for August 15th, you're in for something special. Villages fill up for the panigyri, kantades bands play mandolins in the streets and there's dancing that doesn't really stop once it starts.

Grab some fritoura or mandolato from the stalls, say yes when someone offers you a dance, and just let the evening carry you. 👌💙

There's a moment, right as your boat slips through the heart-shaped opening, when the light changes completely.

Turquoise water closing in on both sides, limestone walls rising above you and for a second the whole world narrows down to this one cave that somehow, by pure geological accident, took the shape of a heart. 💙

The road to Plakaki doesn't tell you what's coming. Just a narrow route past Agalas, until it opens onto cliffs that seem to fall straight into the Ionian without hesitation. 💛

Rock formations rise out of the water like they've been standing there since before anyone thought to name them. And then, some evenings, the whole scene turns gold, slowly, like it's in no hurry to impress you. 🌞
