Northern Oregon coastal areas (Newport and north) are more "citified", its where the Portlanders go. There is much more traffic and congestion. The Tillamook coast is very nice though and worth a visit. 3 Capes Loop is a very nice drive. Central coast (Newport south to Coos Bay) is also nice in its own way. Newport has a nice aquarium, a marine life center and old town is full of fun shops to explore. Florence has sand dune rides. Heceta Head Lighthouse is a nice short hike from the parking area and just south of the lighthouse is Sea Lion Caves which is the only cave on the coast to see sea lions up close in their natural habitat. Shore Acres in Coos Bay is a must sea. Its beautiful. Southern coast is much more rural and all of our towns are small with quirky little shops. Visit old town Bandon and make sure to stop at Cranberry Sweets. Langlois Market is a stop for the best hot dogs on the coast - ask for the homemade mustard and pickles. Gold Beach has the world famous Jerry's Jet and Mail Boats. If you have time, book a couple of nights in Gold Beach and take a jet boat tour up the famous Rogue River. Leaving Gold Beach and going south you will enter the Samuel Boardman State Scenic Area. There are many waysides to stop and sight see (please stay on marked trails) within this area. Natural Bridge and Secret Beach are the most popular and can be more crowded than the others in the summer. Brookings is the largest town on the south coast. We have a downtown area and also have shops in our port. Sporthaven Beach is a popular and easily accesible beach. North of town is Harris Beach State Park and is very pretty. South of town is Crissy Field State Park. It used to be a landing strip for aircraft back during WW2 but is now full of hiking trails and beach access. Jed Smith, in CA, is a beautiful campground and has a day use area as well. I would also recommend going a little further south to Trees of Mystery in Klamath (south of Crescent City, CA). You wont be disappointed. Most of all, just have fun. Ask a local for their favorite hangouts as well. There are a lot of hidden gems all along the coast.

I happened to be way far south by California when I got the news that there would be a spectacular display of the Northern Lights due to the sun erupting a solar flare our way.

So then I had some decisions to make, the whole coast was forecasted to be nothing but clouds so I either had to drive 4 and a half hours out of my way to get to a clearing, or just miss what may be one of the best displays of Northern lights this year. I am very unfamiliar with the whole area so it was a very difficult decision. I expected to just stop and start taking pictures wherever I found a clearing, but then saw this golden opportunity to witness Northern lights somewhere that not many people have before.

Mt Shasta is in North-Central California and is really far south, so I never expected to be able to witness the Northern lights here!! We arrived at the lake and found a view looking North, I could immediately see the lights dancing through the sky!! When I saw the beautiful purple crowning the mountain I was so excited 😍 This little spot was not on my radar at all, and the only reason I went was because it was one of the very few spots on the entire west coast with a clear view to the North.

We spent all night watching the lights dance through the sky and stayed until sunrise. I really fell in love with that little lake as it was so peaceful and calm. I absolutely can not wait to make a planned trip there in the future 💜
