Turning 30
Turning 30 may just be a number for you, but if you know a little of my story you will understand why it’s more than just a number to me.
Sadly, a lot of my childhood friends are serving time in prison. Many of them are dead. A great deal of them are in gangs. Some are still at this age begging for food in the streets of Guatemala. Maybe a lot of them are also turning 30 this year, or more, because they can’t stop time. But the sad reality is that they will never change their orphanage habits and/or orphanage mentality and of course the wildness of the streets without support from anyone but themself. Turning 30 is a huge step for me. I never thought I was going to make it this far, nor did I want to. I survived on a day-by-day basis ever since the first day that I remember being alive.
Just because I had a dream didn’t mean that I was actually going to get it. And like all my friends from the orphanage, we didn’t have anyone to encourage us to pursue our hopes and dreams. I think part of my personal growing up is asking for help for others. That would be the greatest gift of turning 30. I thank each of you who has even given a thought of how to support me in any way. I feel fortunate to have family members and friends that I can actually claim. Whether I want to or not, I have to grow up mentally because this is a new world that I live in. And I am so happy to say that 30 is more than just a number now for me.
My first step in showing that I am growing up is by asking you to please consider giving me one dollar or even one cent to support this great need that must be taken care of soon. I have noticed that almost all of these recipients in Guatemala have dirt floors. They eat, sleep, and play on the dirt floor. The rainy season in Guatemala lasts for 6 months, if not more. I feel a great honor about delivering the food, but it is not enough due to everything sitting on the ground. Water, mud, and insects can enter the food supply. With this being said, they can lose a good percentage of their food. I have come up with this achievable solution. These Sterilite 106L plastic bins are about $50 each. And they can last for more than 25 years if you take good care of them. There are currently 20 families I facilitate with food deliveries, each in need 3 containers, one a piece for rice, beans and corn.
Helping a family you don’t know may not be something you will never think of again, but I can assure you that this family will be thinking of you forever. I am not trying to change the world, but together we are trying to change someone’s life for the better. Today we can start with 1 person and maybe that person will help many more in the future. Thank you for any contributions in honor of my 30th birthday.
