Turtle season on Guatemala's Pacific coast, roughly September through January.

Hatchlings come out of the nest at dusk and make the run to the water on their own. The black sand holds the day's heat, the light goes soft, and for a few minutes the whole beach is moving. It's a truly incredible sight.

That's Fuego from Acatenango, close enough to hear it.

The two volcanoes share a saddle, which is why our basecamp faces this direction. At sunrise the whole cone goes copper. At night you feel the eruption in your chest a half-second before the sound reaches you.

On the third day of the Sky Route, we arrive at Agua Camp and walk into Chuinimachicaj, where a women's cooperative works in backstrap weaving.

This isn't a demonstration staged for visitors. It's the cooperative's own work, and they decide what's shown, what's sold, and what stays theirs. Our groups are small partly so a visit stays a visit rather than an intrusion.

Backstrap weaving is one of the oldest continuously practiced crafts in the Americas. It survived conquest, war, and the mass-produced textile market. It's still here because women kept teaching it to their daughters.

Buy directly. Ask what the pattern means. Pay the asking price.

Green like you wouldn't believe.

Four days from Antigua to Lake Atitlán, and this is the stretch nobody expects - hours of cloud forest, everything misty and close and quiet, before it opens up again to sweeping volcano views.

Agua at golden hour, wearing a cloud around its shoulders that'll sit there until dark.

This is camp on the Sky Route. The evening goes like this: walk in, pick a chair, someone hands you a drink. Hot shower. Lanterns on. Dinner. Then the sky changes color three or four times and the conversation gets quieter.

Four days, Antigua to Lake Atitlán. You carry a day pack. We move the camp ahead of you.
