This beautiful Northern Emerald Toucanet (Aulacorhynchus prasinus) posed for a photo shoot in a dead pine tree at Los Vencejos. The many shades of green this bird boasts are the perfect camouflage in the lush landscapes of the cloud forest.

The beautiful Scaly-throated Foliage-gleaner (Anabacerthia variegaticeps) is an under-appreciated cloud forest species of Furnarid that can be found from Mexico to Ecuador. It is rather difficult to photograph as it spends most of its time inspecting dense clumps of vegetation, rarely perching out in the open like this bird did for our birding party at Ranchitos del Quetzal in Baja Verapaz, Guatemala on a recent tour. Many thanks to Rudy Botzoc and the rest of the staff at Ranchitos for making our visit special.

Crimson-collared Tanager (Ramphocelus sanguinolentus) collecting nesting material at Los Vencejos.

This beautiful tanager ranges from southern Mexico to central Panama where it can be found in humid lowlands and foothills, especially where plants in the genus Piper are prevalent, an important food source.

An uncommon and poorly known endemic to Mexico and Northern Central America, the Gray-collared Becard (Pachyramphus major) is actually pretty reliable at Finca Rubel Chaim, in Guatemala. The Finca is gaining notoriety as a must-visit birding destination for those attempting to see all regional endemics in Guatemala.
