What happens in Guatemala , message to our customers in the country and those coming very soon ...
On Sunday, January 18, 2026, Guatemala experienced a series of simultaneous and coordinated armed attacks targeting the National Civil Police (PNC) in multiple locations across the country. These incidents occurred following riots in prisons and the retaking of control of a prison by the authorities. The situation has led to a series of road closures and detours in Guatemala City and its surroundings due to ongoing police procedures. Since Saturday, January 17, riots have been reported in several prisons across the country, including Renovación 1 in Escuintla, Fraijanes, and the Men's Preventive Center in Zone 18. During these riots, hostage-taking and a series of demands by inmates were reported. On Sunday, January 18, the PNC reported that it had regained control of the Renovación 1 prison. Minutes after this announcement, a wave of attacks against police officers. According to information gathered by emergency services and security sources, this escalation of violence is presented as a possible direct reaction by the Barrio 18 gang.
Does this affect in any way tourism in Guatemala?
What does this “state of siege “of 30 days declared a few hours ago by the President means for tourism. Well, to be honest … more presence of police on the road and more check points specially around the capital. Nothing more, nothing less. All destinations are open, all transport services are working normal, all borders are open, airport working normal, hotels, guides … There are no restrictions on movement, no curfew... it’s just a way of making it easier for the police to act against the gangs IN THE CAPITAL. To win the control over the prisons again . A far from my bed show for the common visitor / traveler already in Guatemala or coming to Guatemala . This has nothing to do with tourism, most if not all of our visitors will not experience anything related to this , it will not impact at all your travel plans .
Welcome in Guatemala.
