La contaminación no ocurre por accidente. En un sendero sobre el Lago de Atitlán, el daño se ve.

Lo que la basura le hace al ecosistema:
→ El plástico no desaparece. Se fragmenta y se filtra al suelo.
→ Los restos de comida alteran los ciclos naturales de la fauna.
→ La basura bloquea el drenaje. El resto baja al lago.
→ Para el ecosistema, nada desaparece.

El Día de la Tierra existe para hacer visible lo invisible. 🌎
El sendero no olvida.
Lo que la tierra nos da, nosotros lo cuidamos.

Litter doesn't happen by accident. On a trail above Lake Atitlán, the damage is visible.

What waste does to the ecosystem:
→ Plastic doesn't disappear. It breaks down into fragments that filter into the soil.
→ Food waste disrupts the natural cycles of local wildlife.
→ Litter blocks drainage. The rest makes its way down to the lake.
→ For the ecosystem, nothing disappears.

Earth Day exists to make the invisible visible.
The trail doesn't forget.
What the earth gives us, we protect. 🌎

20 momentos en el Volcán Atitlán del martes pasado. Y una pregunta que no podemos ignorar.

¿Cómo termina basura en un lugar como este?

La realidad es que no hay una sola respuesta. Es una mezcla de factores: falta de educación ambiental, recursos limitados para mantener el sendero, poca infraestructura para el manejo de residuos y decisiones individuales que se acumulan con el tiempo.

Lo que vemos en la cumbre no pasa de un día para otro. Pasa poco a poco.

Por eso, esta jornada de limpieza el 25 de abril no es solo para recoger basura. Es para cambiar la forma en la que nos relacionamos con este lugar.

Lo que subimos, también debemos bajarlo.

Gracias a todas las personas que ya han donado y se han sumado a este esfuerzo. Su apoyo está haciendo posible cubrir materiales, logística y trabajo local para cuidar el Volcán Atitlán.

Cada aporte suma. Cada acción cuenta.

How does trash end up in a place like this?

There isn’t a single answer. It’s a mix of factors: limited environmental education, limited resources for maintenance, lack of waste infrastructure, and individual choices that add up over time.

What we see at the summit doesn’t happen overnight. It builds little by little.

This cleanup on April 25th is not just about removing waste. It’s about changing how we relate to this place.

What we carry up, we should carry down.

Holly week in the Mayan Highlands 🕯️

Semana Santa in Santiago Atitlán is more than a celebration, it’s a living expression of Mayan syncretism.
Catholic traditions brought during colonization blend with ancient Tz’utujil Maya spirituality, creating something entirely unique.

Processions move through streets layered with color and incense, while ancestral beliefs remain present in symbols, rituals, and the deep connection to the land and lake.


La Semana Santa en Santiago Atitlán es más que una celebración, es una expresión viva del sincretismo maya.
Las tradiciones católicas traídas durante la colonización se entrelazan con la espiritualidad ancestral Tz’utujil, creando algo único.

Las procesiones recorren calles llenas de color e incienso, mientras las creencias ancestrales siguen presentes en los símbolos, los rituales y la profunda conexión con la tierra y el lago.
