Getting close to large and gentle mammals is the most life changing experience. The s***m whales of Dominica are used to humans and permit us in their social zone

Thanks to strict permits and enforcement people have been swimming ethically with whales on this island for over 20 years now. Since this sub-cluster has a small range of less than 200 miles these whales they have only experienced respectable human-animal interaction creating more trust

Adults, mothers and babies trust humans enough to permit us to enter their social zone. You almost have to avoid collision

Not only in world famous Hanifaru but also all around there are mantas everywhere, getting cleaned, feeding and playing. Yes playing! These large brained fish are actually playful, doing manoeuvres that are not necessary for any behaviour

Baa Atoll in Summer is where it is at. And with it, I mean tons and tons of food for filter feeders.

There are so many whale sharks here at the moment that you can snorkel with them pretty much day and night.

We have been privileged to have exclusive access to our stay at . This small and prestigious resort caters to individuals rather than groups. There’s only ever a few guests on the Dive boat, but they’re in touch with all the dive companies around and are able to react spontaneously to whale shark sightings

Slow exposure macro photography. What a royal pain with no guaranteed outcome. Here i tried adding red light into the mix.

One needs to vary video light (3 lights here), shutterspeed (1/6 was the winner for this), aperture (f10) and ISO (400) as well as the angle because it really only works if you have a dsrk background. Which is hard with a 4 cm juvenile sweetlips. The biggest frustration is that the fish is almost never in the right position. This took 20mins and 306 photos!
