For many centuries, the Kunisaki Peninsula was an important centre of Shugendo, a syncretism of the indigenous, animistic Shinto religion and Buddhism brought from China and Korea.

On the Kunisaki Trek, we visit three temples: Futago-ji, Iwato-ji and Monjusen-ji. Futago-ji dates back 1,300 years and stands near the peak of Mount Futago, the highest mountain at the centre of the peninsula. Iwato-ji holds the oldest Niōmon guardian statues on the peninsula, while Monjusen-ji is among the region's oldest temples.

When the weather gets warmer and reveals summer's vibrant greens, there is maybe no better place for a leisurely walk than northeastern Kyushu, a region of Japan renowned for its beautiful, richly varied rural landscapes.

On the Onsen Gastronomy: Oita & Kumamoto tour, we stroll through quiet hamlets to the hill-top castle ruins of Taketa, its scale alluding to the power once held by the daimyo lord who ruled the surrounding domain.

After our light guided strolling has allowed us to thoroughly enjoy the beautiful countryside, we enjoy gourmet meals and relax in hot spring baths at the delightful onsen villages of Yufuin, Kurokawa and Nagayu.

・Aizu, in northern Tohoku, where old highways, samurai history and quiet rural communities come together.
・The Nagasaki Kaido, a historic highway through Saga and Nagasaki Prefectures connecting Japan with the rest of the world for centuries.
・The Izu Peninsula, a short journey from Tokyo with rugged coastline, wasabi fields, fishing villages, and the historic port of Shimoda, where Japan's long period of seclusion came to an end in the nineteenth century.

Tour Leader Tetsuo captured alpine flora on a recent Hokkaido Hike.

Passing through remote verdant forests, across wet lands, up spectacular volcanoes, past steaming vents and onto high plateaus, we see alpine flowers not just peculiar to Hokkaido but some that are so rare that they are found only on one mountain. In all there are about 500 different alpine flowers blooming through the summer season.

Phew… summer is here in Japan and we finally caught our breath after our Summer Seminar last month. We have always held it on the beautiful Kunisaki Peninsula in Kyushu since our first in 2010 when a small huddle of us gathered. Ever since, however, our numbers have only grown making this year’s event our largest ever when over 130 of us thronged together.

Our seminars are a vital element behind the continued success of Walk Japan. They are a time for us to reflect, share, learn, find support and be inspired. They also allow us to reinforce our bonds with each other and remind ourselves of the collective effort that underpins our tours and Community Initiatives.

And the best part? After productive few days of panels and presentations, we wound down in essential fashion with onsen hot spring baths, good food and karaoke.

Self-Guided Salt Road Wayfarer

A new self-guided walking tour following the Salt Road, an old trading route in central Japan.

Along the way we follow old roads and climb quiet mountain paths in the spectacular Japan Alps region on a trail once used by bokka porters to transport merchandise, including salt, from the Sea of Japan to landlocked Matsumoto.
Their daily lives were undoubtedly tough but would only have been uplifted by the glorious surroundings of the towering mountains, pristine beech forests and crystal-clear streams; scenes that are equally enjoyable to this day.

Starting in Omachi, a charming rural town in Nagano Prefecture, the tour follows the Salt Road north through sleepy hillside villages and woodlands, aside lakes and over mountain passes to Itoigawa on the Sea of Japan coast in Niigata Prefecture.

Therapeutic and relaxing onsen hot spring baths are a feature each night of the tour with multi-course traditional feasts with ingredients freshly sourced from the surrounding farms, local rivers and mountains, and the Sea of Japan.

Summer has officially arrived in Kyushu, but our newest volunteer Lily has braved the heat to assist with our Community Initiatives in Kunisaki.

Lily's interest in rural development led her to reach out us and she soon made her way to our headquarters on the Kunisaki Peninsula. From weeding and cutting grass to harvesting blueberries, she worked alongside local members across a range of tasks, learning the rhythms of agriculture and rural life in Japan along the way.
