The growing influence of knowledge economy, cultural industries, and creative cities has become a global trend. This is evident in Hong Kong, where there has been increasing concerns regarding city branding, creative activities, and the role of art and culture in social development since the turn of the century. Changes in media, art, and culture have to be placed in a broader vision of urban and

social transformation and public concern has subsequently solidified in three policy areas:

1. Branding Hong Kong as Asia’s world city, with media, culture, and creativity as the key transformative forces regarding the relationships among the market, the state, and cultural workers and citizens.

2. Linking Hong Kong with other creative cities to seek future developments and synergies of inter-Asia and transnational cultural circuits in a shifting geopolitical context.

3. Positioning Hong Kong’s unique cultural identity, whereby Chinese cultural traditions and British colonial legacies mingle with the diversities of other cultures, with its intriguing debates on collective memory, cultural heritage, and city regeneration. In many ways these debates regarding media, culture, and creative city development have become more pertinent with the rapidly strengthening ties between Hong Kong and Mainland cities. Their repercussions also extend beyond China to the entire Asian region, reflecting deeper patterns of shifting regional and global cultural dynamics. These shifts include the rise of the knowledge economy, the pe*******on of global media and IT, a growing emphasis on “cultural economies” in modern societies, and more intense strategic competition among nations and places. These changes have major implications for tourism, the built environment, art and cultural development, heritage preservation, corporate responsibility, community participation, and modes of public governance. All this calls for efforts to understand the issues involved and develop visions and strategies for sustainable city and social development in the 21st century. 大王回來

【大王有話說】 還記得去年《天井大王：華富上邨的盂蘭勝會》紀錄片🎥 放映大受歡迎，本大王一直都好想回到天井之中，在盂蘭勝會跟大家見面。

經過團隊一番努力及幾位前互委會主席的鼎力支持💪🏼，以及康樂及文化事務署非遺資助計劃資助，今年「大王」將以「傳承華富邨的盂蘭勝會及共同想像其未來」的名義重返華富邨。

今年盂蘭節特別之處是將會由華昌樓、華泰樓及華生樓三座協辦，於華泰樓高座天井平台舉辦盂蘭勝會🏮。

𝐌𝐂𝐂𝐂 𝐂𝐚𝐩𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐣𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐏𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐃𝐚𝐲 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟓

Our MSocSc Media, Culture and Creative Cities students successfully presented their ongoing research at our Capstone Project Presentation Day on 8 March 2025, held at The University of Hong Kong.

Students shared initial findings of their projects, and received constructive feedback from Faculty members and their peers on how to further strengthen their research.

Our teaching team was highly impressed by the quality and originality of presentations by all students. Special prizes were awarded for ‘Most Engaging Presentation’, ‘Best Use of Sociological Theory’ and ‘Best Overall Presentation’.

“The growth I achieved from MCCC Capstone Project was beyond expectation. Hectic as the schedule was, I grasped profound insights in academic research by working closely with Dr. Carmen Tong and my teammates Joe and Sally. I genuinely appreciate the programme’s rigorous training in research methodology and critical thinking, which laid a solid foundation for our future studies. Also, the supportive and inclusive environment at HKU Department of Sociology has given me the confidence to pursue academia, where I have always felt seen, accepted, and respected throughout this journey. We are thrilled to announce that Prof. Travis Kong has been honoured with this esteemed award for his research output: Sexuality and the Rise of China: The Post-1990s Gay Generation in Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Mainland China (2023).

In Sexuality and the Rise of China, Travis S. K. Kong examines the changing meanings of same-sex identities, communities, and cultures for young gay men in contemporary Hong Kong, Taiwan, and mainland China. Drawing on ninety life stories, Kong’s transnational q***r sociological approach shows the complex interplay between personal biography and the dramatically changing social institutions in these three societies. Kong conceptualizes coming out as relational politics and the q***r/ tongzhi community and commons as an affective, imaginative means of connecting, governed by homonormative masculinity. He shows how monogamy is a form of cruel optimism and envisions state and sexuality intertwining in different versions of homonationalism in each location. Tracing the alternately diverging and converging paths of being young, “Chinese,” gay, and male, Kong reveals how both Western and emerging inter-/intra- Asian q***r cultures shape q***r/tongzhi experiences. Most significantly, at this historical juncture characterized by the rise of China, Kong criticizes the globalization of sexuality by emphasizing inter-Asia modeling, referencing, and solidarities and debunks the essentializing myth of Chineseness, thereby decolonizing Western sexual knowledge and demonstrating the differential meanings of Chineseness/q***rness across the Sinophone world.

The book has been shortlisted as one of the five finalists for the 2024 LGBTQ+ Studies Lammy Award (https://lambdaliterary.org/awards/).

Victoria形容，藉進修提升個人競爭力，有利事業發展。
Victoria本科修讀心理學，現於一間市場研究顧問公司擔任研究經理，負責定量市場研究。Victoria笑言多謝網路搜尋引擎，讓她在搜集進修資訊時，得悉獎學金計劃。「本地研究生課程所費不菲，如沒有獎學金，我很大機會打消進修的念頭。」

Victoria指，獎學金計劃鞏固了她對市場研究行業的發展志向，不單讓她學到設計問卷及數據分析的實際技巧，同時鼓勵她在工作上結合學到的理論及思考模式。「課程教授的社會學知識讓我以更宏觀的角度詮釋消費者的心理及行為，並啟發我將數據、社會文化及科技連結起來，更全面地協助客戶了解最新的市場趨勢及機遇。」

建立人脈，是她另一個進修收穫，「認識到從事市場推廣工作的同學，他們正正是我研究工作的真正用家。透過交流，能夠知道他們平日如何使用研究數據，有助我調整工作內容，讓數據及分析更切合用家所需。」Victoria表示，日後或會進修更高深的數碼營銷數據分析、用戶體驗設計等，以應對大數據科技的發展趨勢。

她鼓勵今年獎學金申請者，嘗試把目前的工作性質、需要的能力與報讀課程內容串連起來，並展示對行業的抱負，增加成功申請獎學金的機會。
