This National Geographic article gives a good insight into the fantasy and reality of living in Shangrila. Few tourists make it out beyond Shangrila's wonderfully renovated old town, but beyond the snowy mountain scape of Kawa Karpo are some of the worlds deepest gorges, rated Wolrd Heritage by UNESCO for theirincredible biodiversity.

Paul and Mellie who drove up from Lijiang and through Tiger Leaping Gorge to Shangrila (Gyalthang) with our local guide, enjoyed checking out the monasteries and palatial houses that the local Tibetans are building from the profits of tourism, mushrooms, and the caterpillar fungus industry. Did you know that more than ten thousand monks from all over Tibet come to Repkong to pray for Peace at the Monlam Festival. We are organising a group tour out of Xining (on the Silk Road) for Feb 15th, or travel together from Beijing on the 12th.

Kawa Karpo is a UNESCO listed World Heritage mountain feeding snowy waters into Asia's Greatest Rivers. One of our Shangri-La guides rates this as his favorite trekking destination for photography. Most treks are between 10-14 days.

Monlam Festival. Banned in Lhasa in the late 1980's. Check out the spectacle of Tibet's most important prayer festival in Qinghai from February 15th. No permits required. Travel by jeep, camp out with the pilgrims.
