This National Geographic article gives a good insight into the fantasy and reality of living in Shangrila. Few tourists make it out beyond Shangrila's wonderfully renovated old town, but beyond the snowy mountain scape of Kawa Karpo are some of the worlds deepest gorges, rated Wolrd Heritage by UNESCO for theirincredible biodiversity.

Monlam Festival. Banned in Lhasa in the late 1980's. Check out the spectacle of Tibet's most important prayer festival in Qinghai from February 15th. No permits required. Travel by jeep, camp out with the pilgrims.
