The Kellogg-HKUST community had the privilege of attending a seminar led by James Root, a Senior Partner at Bain & Company, where he shared invaluable insights from his book, The Archetype Effect. This research-backed exploration delves into the complex landscape of worker motivation, based on an extensive global study involving nineteen countries and over forty-eight thousand participants.

One participant shared, “James' class, supported by solid data, focuses on work motivation — not just for leaders, but importantly for staff. While it may not impact daily business performance immediately, it provides insights for leaders to better understand themselves and become more open-minded about HR issues, new trends, biases, and conflicts, prompting possible solutions.”

Another noted, “James’ theory, backed by comprehensive data, is insightful and convincing. It helps us understand the conflicts within our companies and industries, especially addressing some of the myths around staff motivation.”

Mr. Root previously taught “International Growth” in the Kellogg-HKUST EMBA program.

In an era of gig work, remote work, and AI-assisted automation, understanding worker motivators is more crucial than ever. The Archetype Effect offers a fresh framework for enhancing employee wellbeing, performance, and retention.

Thank you, James, for sharing your expertise and guiding us through the evolving dynamics of the workplace!

Driving Change Through Technology🚘

The Kellogg-HKUST EMBA community set out on an exciting journey to Shenzhen, exploring the innovative core of BYD, a leader in the electric vehicle and renewable energy sectors.

Our visit provided a unique opportunity to explore BYD's advancements through an insider's perspective:

💡BYD began as a battery supplier in 1994 and has since transformed into a Fortune 500 powerhouse, expanding its expertise from rechargeable batteries to electric vehicles (EVs) and innovative renewable energy solutions.

💡The guided tour of their manufacturing line offered us insight into the meticulous processes that drive their production efficiency.

💡Battery safety in electric vehicles has long been a concern due to high-voltage shock hazards. We saw how BYD’s latest battery technologies are redefining EV safety, ensuring a more secure and reliable driving experience

Through direct engagement with industry leaders like BYD, we empower our alumni and students to stay current with the latest trends and cultivate strategic insights that will drive meaningful change in their organizations.

Keep that thirst for knowledge alive!🔥 The 5th annual Technology for Change Asia, hosted by The Economist Impact, kicked off with incredible energy today. As the Diamond Sponsor, we were thrilled to join over 500 passionate business leaders, policymakers, and innovators to explore tech solutions and share ideas on harnessing technology for meaningful change.

The day began with an insightful interview featuring Prof. Kai-Lung Hui, our Academic Director and Acting Dean of the HKUST Business School, who decoded the future of web3 and virtual assets.

Prof. Hui was later joined by Kellogg-HKUST alumni Mr. Keith Ip, CTO of Li & Fung, and Mr. Michael Yue, Managing Director and GM of Google Hong Kong, for a strategy session. They exchanged insights on the latest applications of AI and the future of computing.

It was also a joy to reconnect with familiar faces, as many alumni attended, eager to stay ahead in the digital age and support the Kellogg-HKUST community.

As we wrapped up the day, we felt inspired and optimistic about the future of technology and its potential for impactful change. We look forward to exploring the opportunities that lie ahead.

Women often encounter gender-specific obstacles in the workplace, such as societal pressures and familial responsibilities that can hinder their ambitions. We recognize these challenges and are committed to supporting women professionally and personally. To promote female leadership, we have launched initiatives, including awards for women leaders, to help them pursue their educational goals.

Over the years, we have seen positive changes in the business environment and our classroom, particularly with the KH28 cohort (Class of 2026) reaching a record 38% female representation! This milestone highlights the increasing recognition of the valuable insights and leadership women bring to the business world.

On International Women’s Day, let’s reflect on our progress and commit to fostering change. By supporting one another, we can create an environment where women feel empowered to pursue their career aspirations.
