🦥 Three-Toed Sloths
What are they?
Three-toed sloths are slow-moving animals that live in the trees of Central and South American rainforests. They are famous for their relaxed way of life and for always looking like they’re smiling!
Where do they live?
They are found in tropical rainforests in countries like Costa Rica, Honduras, Panama, and Brazil. They spend almost their whole lives hanging in trees.
What do they eat?
They eat mostly leaves, flowers, and fruits. Because their food doesn’t give them much energy, they move very slowly.
Special Features:
• They have three toes on their front feet.
• They can turn their heads almost all the way around (up to 270°).
• Their fur grows green algae, which helps them blend in with the trees.
• They only come down from trees once a week to go to the bathroom!
How long do they live?
They can live 20 to 30 years in the wild.
Are they in danger?
Some three-toed sloths are safe for now, but others—like the pygmy sloth—are endangered because their forests are being cut down.
