Let’s discuss breaks!
Trekking isn’t just an every day hike. It’s multiple days in a row of hiking, often times with 2K+ of elevation gain (and sometimes just as much loss!)
If you aren’t used to trekking (meaning you don’t do it 3-4 times a year at minimum) then body conservation is key.
One of the most overlooked aspects of that is REST.
✨ often times people will try to “tough it out” by not stopping. Seeing a break as a sign of weakness or not being fit enough for something.
✨ This is how you use up reserves when you need them the most. Pushing it too hard too fast will wear you down and will make the days that follow harder.
✨ When trekking with a group, remember that keeping your slowest hiker rested is more important than the speed record. If you stop and it takes you 10 minutes to feel rested, they should get the same amount.
✨ Drinking water and eating while walking is a SKILL. If you only drink when you’re thirsty you will become dehydrated. If you only eat when you’re hungry you’ll get behind on calories.
✨ Breaks give you a chance to get your pack off your back. Contrary to what some people think, getting weight off your back during longer breaks helps.
✨ When hiking with a guide, if they say to to break, take a break. Guides are lifelines and they are being paid to get you somewhere…not to get you there fast.
✨ As my most favorite Sherpa once said ( ) “The only activity today is hiking, if we rush through it then what else are you going to do?”
✨ Enjoy the views! Take the chance to look around and appreciate where you are and what you are doing.
