Highlight of my Global Big Day with eBird, a Sunbittern fledgling!!! It's already practicing the defensive "Frontal display".
Más Aves!!! Rio Santiago 😍
Seeing an adult pair periodically along this stream since January, I had hopes to perhaps locate a nest site... never did, but clearly one was built and successfully produced at least one fledgling.

As a general "rule" birds with "ant" attached to their name are Not named so because they love to eat the little, or not so little formic acid factories... but here at Rio Santiago, this female Red-throated Ant-Tanager spent several minutes eating many small red ants swarming on a Cecropia tree, as if to say, "Ants can be food too!" and posing the question, 'what's in a name...'

Chris Staurovsky here, with a pair of Common Pauraque, a species way over on the thrifty, keep it simple end of the nest building spectrum... but also way over on the equal partnership end of the parental brooding behavior spectrum, who have set up shop right on the fringe of a frequently travelled trail here at Rio Santiago... relying heavily on their cryptic, nothing to see here plumage, stillness, or as a last resort some classic distraction displays that silently scream... no! look over here, not over there... just 2 VIP eggs resting quietly...

How many times have you looked up at a raptor soaring overhead, to say ‘oh, it’s just a Red-tailed Hawk?’ Well Bryce Robinson and the Red-tailed Hawk Project are on a mission to prove that this species is anything but common. They may be the most abundant raptor in North America, but they’re also the result of incredible evolutionary dynamics that have woven a tapestry of 16 subspecies across the continent.

Click below to learn more about this wonderfully widespread yet mysterious species and the work the Red-tailed Hawk Project is doing to crack the code of their diversity.
