Only 45 minutes drive from the sea is the Gorski Kotar mountain region of north coast Croatia⛰️ It’s a hiker’s paradise🥾 and a great escape when you need a break from the heat and the crowds on the beach in the summer. The area is very popular for alpine and cross-country skiing⛷️ in the winter as well. Gorski Kotar is growing more popular every year during all seasons. The winter season in Croatian is called zima, lasting from December through February❄️ Winter in Croatia is cold and if it’s windy, even colder. It’s rare to snow near the sea, it’s more likely to just rain, but nearby mountain tops are covered with powder🏔️ The most popular activity in winter is skiing⛷️ especially in the Gorski Kotar region. Platak Ski Resort is only a 45 minute drive from our rental apartments and nearby Mrkopalj is known for their cross-country skiing🎿 Tourist locations are much less crowded and accommodations and flights are at their lowest prices after New Year’s🎊 Just when you think the partying is over after December’s many holidays, you get thrown back in to more festivities with the beginning of Carnival in January that continues through the rest of winter☃️

September, or Rujan in Croatian, is the beginning of Autumn, or Jesen🍁 If you are traveling to Croatia in September, you will notice the change of the seasons in the wind. The month can still be very warm at times, but you will begin to see cooler days as well, especially in the northern and more mountainous parts of the country. The peak tourist season has ended for the year, which means accommodation prices go down and everywhere is less crowded. September is one of the main months for grape🍇 and olive harvesting🫒 throughout the country’s vast amount of w**eries and groves. With more mild weather, the country is full of events and festivals to enjoy outside that take on less of a beach vibe and more of a fall theme🍂

Rastoke is located inland from the north coast about a 2 hours drive in the Lika region. I recommend visiting for the afternoon, or if you’re on your way to Plitvice Lakes from Zagreb to stop for lunch.
The village🏘️ looks like it’s straight out of a story book📕 where two rivers merge🏞️ & create several little waterfalls & streams around💦
We ate freshly caught, local trout 🎣 at Restoran Petro & then visited the stone mill to buy flour for bread🍞 & palenta🌽

W**e or vino in Croatian, like Italian, is some of the best in Europe partly due to the country’s Mediterranean climate and beautiful blend of mountains and sea that flavors the soil 🍇 Most Americans have no idea that Croatia has such fine w**e 🍷 This is because it is very hard to find Croatian w**e in the U.S. since most Croatian w**e does not contain preservatives because they believe it ruins the w**e. W**e is a large part of Croatian culture. When they are not drinking coffee, most likely they are drinking w**e😉

Olive oil, or maslinovo ulje in Croatian, is also called ✨liquid gold✨ and many olive oil producers from Croatia have won international awards and other high accolades for their oil 🫒 Olive groves can easily be found throughout many areas of the country, especially in the regions of Istria, Dalmatia and several islands. Many producers offer tours & tastings!😋
