It’s easy to assume each European country has its very own look and feel. Greece for its crystal clear waters and pine forests stretching to the beach. Italy for its monuments. Spain for its majesty.

But this isn’t Italy. It’s not Greece, Spain, Sardinia or Montenegro.

This is Lokrum Island - it’s a 15-minute ferry from Dubrovnik’s Old Town and one of the most underrated spots on the Adriatic.

No cars. No hotels. Just peacocks, pine forests and water so clear it doesn’t look real.

There’s a hill fort in West Sussex with folklore so interwoven that it becomes more than just your average Sunday morning stroll.

Chanctonbury Ring isn’t just ancient - it’s layered. It’s an Iron Age fort and Roman temple, covered by a crown of Victorian trees planted by a 16-year-old who spent his whole life watching his saplings grow into a tower of foliage overlooking the South Downs National Park.

Then there’s the folklore - the Devil who appears with a bowl of soup when you walk around the trees anticlockwise seven times, the tales of witchcraft and fairy enchantments, the stories locals still whisper about.

I’m not saying I believe all of it, but standing up there at golden hour, wind whipping across the ridge, looking out over miles of Sussex countryside to the north and the sea to the south, there’s just something about this place which makes you feel like there might be more to it than a windswept hillside.

Some spots are just views. This one tells you stories.

€30 felt like a lot for a cable car ride, especially one that lasts for four minutes each way. I almost talked myself out of it.

The thing no one tells you about Dubrovnik is that because the Old Town faces east, golden hour happens above you, not around you. If you want the sunset, you have to climb for it - an hour’s tough hiking, a cab ride or a 4-minute cable car.

So I took the cable car to the top of Mount Srd, then hiked along the ridge until I found a spot away from the crowds. Just me and a few sunset chasers, the mountains on one side, the Adriatic stretching out on the other and the sky doing... this.

Worth every cent. Worth the burning legs. Worth missing the restaurant reservation I probably should have kept.

Wait for the end for sunlight’s final hurrah - truly a ball of fire. I just stood there and stared.

Dubrovnik is one of the most beautiful cities I’ve ever visited, but there are a few things I wish someone had told me before I went.

1. The cruise ships are no joke. Between 10am and 4pm, the Old Town transforms into theme park-style chaos. Use this as your time to relax or get out of the city, if you can.

2. If you’re staying local rather than travelling in for the day, you’ll be able to take advantage of the 8am opening times for the majority of tourist hotspots, a full two hours before the buses arrive. That window? Golden.

2. If you’re staying inside the city walls (and you should, at least once), pack earplugs. The stone passageways carry every sound and the clock tower doesn’t care what time you went to bed.

3. The mosquitoes have landed early this year. I learned this the hard way. Bring repellent if you’re a mossie magnet like me.

4. One for the journey home - you can’t check into airport security until 2 hours before your flight, despite the additional EU checks. Don’t arrive 3 hours early thinking you’ll relax in the lounge. You’ll be sitting in arrivals with everyone else.

I’ve put everything I learned into a free Dubrovnik guide — comment ‘Dubrovnik’ below and I’ll send it straight to you ✈️

The sun’s out, half term is here and the ‘what are we doing?’ panic is real.

You don’t need a plane ticket or even a car to make it magic. You just need a train ticket and a sense of adventure - the locations will do the rest and the kids will be talking about it for weeks.

These are five of my favourite unusual escapes from London, all accessible by train:

📍 Ouse Valley Viaduct - 37 arches and 11 million bricks. Feels like you stepped into a period drama. 🚂 41 mins from London Victoria
📍 Arundel Castle - 850 years of history, dressing up boxes in almost every room and a keep to explore. This will keep@them busy for hours. 🚂 1hr 15 mins from London Victoria
📍 Brighton Pavilion - a royal palace that looks like it belongs in India, right next to the beach. Fish and chips for dinner, anyone? 🚂 1hr from London Victoria
📍 Portsmouth Historic Dockyard - climb aboard real warships and walk the deck where Nelson fell. 🚂 1hr 45 mins from London Waterloo
📍 The Wave, Bristol - yes, this is your city surfing destination, suitable even for the little ones (age 4 and up). 🚂 1hr 40 mins from London Paddington

Which one’s making your list? 👇

Save this up your sleeve for when the chorus of ‘I’m bored’ begins.

…but look at the view when you do! This was taken from the ramparts of Fort Lovrijenac looking back at the city walls.

You can’t get into the fort at 5am but you can climb hundreds of steps for this view. It’s one of the best places to watch the sun rising over the city though, so worth the leg day workout!

If you fancy a longer hike, the view from Mount Srd is supposed to be spectacular too but the cable car isn’t running at 5am so you’d need to get a taxi or hike the winding trail up the mountain to get there.

How far have you gone to catch a sunrise? 🌅👇🏼
