Trakošćan: A fairytale castle with a hidden Roman past

In the heart of Hrvatsko Zagorje, surrounded by wooded hills and a reflecting lake, lies Trakošćan Castle, one of the most beautiful and romantic castles in Croatia. Its beauty and rich history attract visitors from all over the world, but few know that this fairytale castle is hidden on the foundations of an ancient Roman fortress.

Archaeological evidence suggests that the site of present-day Trakošćan was inhabited in ancient times. Namely, it is believed that the Romans built a fortress here to defend against the invasion of barbarian tribes.

Although there is no direct evidence of what the fortress was called, it is assumed that the name Trakošćan is derived from the name of the Thracian tribe that once inhabited these areas.
